One of my favorite hymns...

My favourite hymn remains, The Church's One Foundation, written, I think, in 1876. Second would be Praise my Soul the King of Heaven.

Many, many are my favorites. Many of them long forgotten and removed from the hymn books when the gospel songs became popular in the 1800s as a result of revivalism. Sadly many of these songs lacked the doctrinal depth of many of the old english hymns of Watts, Newton, Wesly and Tolpadly.
here are couple of my favorites.

Before the throne of God above

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free.
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.

Behold Him there the risen Lamb,
My perfect spotless righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace,
One in Himself I cannot die.
My soul is purchased by His blood,
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ my Savior and my God!

Come thou fount ( this is the original form, most hymn books have modernized it and taken away the last verse)

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Sorrowing I shall be in spirit,
Till released from flesh and sin,
Yet from what I do inherit,
Here Thy praises I’ll begin;
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Here by Thy great help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood;

Me to realms of endless day.

 

Because I sing early American shape-note music, I still get to sing the hymns of Watts, Newton, and Wesley, along with those of William Cowper, Philip Doddridge, Anne Steele, and Tate & Brady, among others.

"Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" is my favorite hymn text. Here are a couple of others that I like very much.

Remember, Lord, our mortal state,
How frail our lives! how short the date!
Where is the man that draws his breath
Safe from disease, secure from death?

Lord, while we see whole nations die,
Our flesh and sense repine and cry;
Must death forever rage and reign?
