This isn't a current student. The girl was at my school last year.

She had her dad and a sister. Her mom had died a couple of years ago of cancer. I found out Wednesday morning and just couldn't talk about it yesterday. It was hard enough to get through the time with the kids.

Her dad was killed by a man who killed his wife first. The man had apparently sought help and not found it. Now this child that I know has lost another parent within just a few years. She is in the 8th grade.

We were told in staff meeting that he got no help when he asked because he had no insurance. Yet another tragic twist to the story.

I could share with you all that I'm feeling - my prayers for her, but I'm sure you know what they are. This could be a prayer request, but I purposely chose current events because reality is this is happening every where and it's news and NEWS is fodder for prayer.

While we pray for this girl and the rest of her family, let's also pray that somehow people without insurance can still receive help.

I'm struggling to understand the purpose of the thread. Without judging anyone involved. But anytime you opine on an incident like this, you risk raising the ire of someone you may really like.

here are several relevant points from the artifcle....

Main has emotional and mental problems, deputies said, and had recently sought psychiatric help. Main had no health insurance.
Family members said that he had been complaining of what seemed to be panic attacks. He would wake up in the middle of the night soaking wet with sweat, unable to breathe.
This past weekend, he had had a couple of episodes. On Saturday, he went to Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, where he got prescriptions for antibiotics and Paxil, an antidepressant, said Jennifer Robichaud, who is engaged to the Mains’ son, James Main
“He already had a prescription for Xanax. He didn’t want to take the Paxil. He had a lot of questions, and he was worried that this medicine would kill him. He was afraid that he would die because he said it makes him not feel anything,” she said.
On Sunday, Robert Main went to Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville.
“He was so worked up that they gave him a shot to calm him down,” Robichaud said. “They told him to come back tomorrow to speak to a mental doctor.”
After returning home on Sunday, Main told family members that he was going to commit himself to a mental hospital.
Relatives said that they called Hoots on Monday about having him hospitalized. Main did not have health insurance to cover the daily charges. So the hospital referred him to a mental-health agency in Mocksville, but his wife had a doctor’s appointment that day and ran out of time to take him in for an assessment on Monday afternoon. Relatives said they planned to take him yesterday.....

....Robert Main was not employed but did work odd jobs for farmers. The Mains had raised three children, as well as a child Linda Kathleen Main had from a previous marriage.

I guess I believe that in this church age, demon posession is not possible. I wonder where he got the gun to do this, why his loved ones were not more careful to keep themselves safe from him, first and foremost. Second, I blame him, not the lack of help he recieved. Lastly, I wonder, as an ex-mental health pro, what kind of help he needed, or if Christ in his life would have made the difference.

I can't say anything without sounding harsh, but the knee jerk reactions of gun control and free health care for all are not what I believe to be the solution. I go to personal responsibility to God. I'm not trying to get into the head of the O/P, just my opinions after reading this horrible story.

You are right Curtis - there is personal responsibility and Main must be held responsible.

As my original post did say - the news is fodder for prayer which is why I put it here. This was a reminder to me because I had a personal relationship with this particular story. But in all news - there are personal involvements. This one just hit home with me.

While there is personal responsibility, there are very real people involved. Very real people that are hurting. While Main is held responsible, he also needs our prayers as does both families. That was my main point.

And I certainly agree with you on that. I think churches have also dropped the ball when it comes to caring for these folks. It's part of our commission, I believe.

    These folks need our prayers.
