Some folks in my church have expressed a desire to want to get involved in a 1-1 discipleship/mentoring program/relationship. I think it's a great idea. Anyone able to recommend a good study guide, or discipleship plan to use?

    Thanks

If I recall, RevMitchell had some strong feelings about a discipleship program. I hope he jumps in and gives his opinion.

I have benefited greatly from the works of Dallas Willard who provided a solid theological framework/worldview of discipleship, as well as suggested practical disciplines that have worked for many throughout the history of the church. Any training with a foundation of focusing on God in every area of work and life, memorization and meditation upon scripture, and honest and frequent prayer will yield great results. Willard is good about pointing out the numerous pitfalls to transformation and growth - one of the main things is that we should focus on obedience, not on behavior modification - as well as explaining how the mind, body and spirit intersect with each other.

Our church is using a book entitled "Continue" by Paul Chappell, Pastor of Lancaster Baptist Church (Paul Chappell | The Pastor's Perspective) and president of West Coast Baptist College. It is done as either a one on one or couple to couple study. We completed it in late May and will be diving in to disciple another couple in July. I think it's a great study for new Christians and those who haven't really dug into their faith. I will say it got my husband fired up for the Lord (thank you Lord for answered prayer there).

I ordered a copy of that. I'm going to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion. He looks like an impressive guy--he has about a million books he's written, he pastors a church, and is President of a college.

Grace Church of Mentor Ohio published "Foundations" Bible study. It is pretty good.
