"and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed" Acts 13:48 (KJV)

    Question: What does "ordained" mean?

    Awesome verse

That is an awesome verse if you know who God ordained to eternal life.

God has hidden the truth from the wise and learned and revealed it to little children.

    His word say's this.

    Zephaniah 3:12
But I will leave within you the meek and humble, who trust in the name of the LORD.

These are His ordained for His word says He will keep them.

Psalms, you used that passage to tell me who the ordained are. But can you use that passage to tell me what ordained means?

    Ordained

It is the work of God that we believe.

We can all read a dictionary. Then it is all interpentation

I can not read Greek. I was wondering if any body out there can define it from a Greek Lexicon.

    ordained

Strong's - to arrange, assign, appoint, determine, ordain, set.
Thayer's - to assign, appoint, ordain, order.

    JD,

"Ordained" ("appointed," TNIV) translates the Greek word tassw, which is used less than ten times in the NT. It has the meaning of "to assign, to set in place."

Some have tried to argue that the form that we have in Acts 13:48 is perfect middle, τεταγμένοι, but most scholars believe that it is perfect passive and therefore nullifies human agency in this appointment that is seen in the perfect middle choice.

    What is important

We all know that it is God who appoints who will be saved, but through scripture we can can easy find out who are those who He appointed for this.

It is simple God has hidden the truth from the wise and learned and revealed it to little children. God is going to keep the meek and humble who trust in the Lord.

So you know that the scripture is true that those who put thier trust in the Lord will not be put to shame.

I don't understand how some can say that it is τεταγμένοι if the word in the text is tassw.

JD, the word in the text is τεταγμένοι from the first person present tassw, which is the form lexicons list.

Sorry I didn't make this clearer. τεταγμένοι can either be a passive or middle perfect participle, depending on the context.

Thanks for that clarification TC. I found a Thayer's on blueletterbible.com. Are there any other reputable lexicons available on line that you know of?

JD, I don't know of any. I heard that the standard BDAG was free online, but I never found it. I use a hard copy.

I believe you can buy BDAG through ESword.

I believe the word was supposed to be "disposed to" -- "...as many as were disposed to eternal life believed." (Can't seem to pull up blueletterbible this morning, though.)

The better "proof" is usually offered by 2nd and 3rd mentions/"witnesses" of the same fact.

tassw, "to appoint, assign," is used 7 times in the NT and nowhere means "disposed to."

    1. Matt 28:16

    2. Acts 13:48

    3. Acts 15:2

    4. Acts 22:10

    5. Acts 28:23

    6. Acts 13:1

    7. 1 Cor 16:15

In none of these references is the meaning "disposed to."

    Guys:

This is a little out of topic, and you can ignore it if you want to.
I don't want to derail this excellent topic.
But how do you set your keyboard to type those greek characters ? in fact, how do you set the keyboard to type any other character than English ?
    thanks.

Thanks, but when I try the copy and paste method, I just get English letters, like: "tassw".

Ah! I think I have discovered something. The above happens when I try to copy and paste from my "Online Bible", but when I tried the same sort of thing with e-Sword, it worked: κύριος
