Orthodoxy: Inherent Truth or Therapy?

    Orthodoxy: Inherent Truth or Therapy?

    This is an interesting idea. Do you agree that some people hold to Christian beliefs because of percieved therapeutic benefits they recieve, and not because of its inherent truth? What do you think has caused some folks to think of Christianity in that manner?

    I guess it would depend on what Christian belief you were talking about. If you were talking about prayer I would tend to agree, but if you were talking about eternal salvation then I would disagree.

    I agree with the prayer thing. What do you think causes people to think about it this way?

    Well I'm not sure what state you are from, but I can't count how many times the news channels here in Texas have done stories on prayer healing people and secular studies that show that people that pray are more healthy, etc. etc. And I can even remember a few national news stories in the recent past.

    The media is EXTREMELY powerful. Unfortunately.

    If one begins with the mistaken view that all religions are pretty much the same thing, then there can't be any "true truth" in them to begin with. Naturally, then, people would have to choose orthodoxy for some other reason, and people would have to consider prayer more for its therapeutic value that for what effect it might have on God.

    But although the intellectual antichristian considers all religions to be equally wrong, the orthodox almost never do; so the former's assumption about the latter would be based on a false premise in that case.
