    Orwell did not get everything right in 1984. He saw an filthy, impoverished world where people were kept oppressed by Big Brother. His reasoning was thus:

    He could not have envisaged that "a glittering antiseptic world of glass and steel and snow-white concrete" where people would accept Big Brother like controls.

    This glittering antiseptic world of glass and steel and snow-white concrete has made us even more willing to sacrifice our freedoms.

    Once the elite have all the controls and police powers in place, niceties will become very scare indeed, but Big Brother has thought ahead and already started to turn America into a prison economy complete with citizen containment areas, for your safety of course.

    I would have to disagree Ponch, I think we find the "antiseptic world..." anesthetising. It is easier to keep the populace quiet if they have "stuff."

    Oh no doubt C4K as long as folks have their tv's and SUV's all is well. That isn't always going to be the case though imo.

    Half a century after 1984 was written and 20 years after the actual date, the world is a different place from the context Orwell wrote in. However some things remain the same.

    The influence of 1984 on our culture is also strongly evident in the language we use, especially when modern issues remind us of the distopia/utopia of 1984. Phrases such as Orwellian, Big Brother and Newspeak are commonly used in our language but would be incomprehensible or lacking in context to cultures not exposed to Orwell's book.

    One of the things Orwell could not have foreseen is the change in the nature of information and information delivery with the internet. It would be interesting to see how Orwell's mind would have seen 1984 or 2000 armed with that knowledge.
