Other than Baptist?

We just had this question a week or so ago but I'll answer again.

I COULD NOT be anything but Baptist.

Baptist born, Baptist bred and when I die I'll be Baptist dead.

Episcopalian, for the more liturgical worship but the loss of autonomy would drive me crazy. The same reason I no longer support the SBC.

In general, I look for a bible-believing church that teaches salvation by grace through faith in Christ. Baptist churches are so diverse in their beliefs, I would not automatically join another Baptist church just because it bears the name "Baptist". There are good ones and bad ones.

 

When I was about 10 years old I asked my mother that same question. She explained to me that she would never be anything other than a Baptist.

Furthermore, she explained that there would never be a time when there would not be a Baptist church to attend. Jesus established His churches and promised that they will be here when He returns.

Is there one that has more than 2-3 sermons?
I've been in the SBC now for about 5 years and I believe the lessons and sermons are recycled.

I visited an Evangelical Free church once while on vacation and found it to be very similar to a typical Baptist service. And I attended a Reformed Presbyterian church for a brief time several years ago. Aside from a few theological differences, I enjoyed it. If I couldn't be Baptist I would probably seek out any solidly Bible-oriented church, whatever the denomination.

 

I would belong to a church where I feel accepted, and where I fit in really well with what they have to offer--irrespective of denominational ties.

I believe that God places members in the body of Christ severally as HE wills. God does not regard Baptist superior to any other group.
If a person will be led of the Spirit they will be in the right church.

 

IF the Baptist faith was wrong, and that is why I would have to pick a new denomination The only reasonable direction I can see going in is counter-reformation. As a friend said, you really only have two options, reformed or not reformed.

 

I have to admit being a little bothered by this thread. What happened to "Christian"...as in following Christ?

I'm Christian, first and foremost. I prefer attending and belonging to a Baptist church, and in Australia, we do. But here in America there is not one near here with a pastor who does not preach more of his own opinions than the Bible, and I don't like that. So when we are here, we attend a basic Bible church about 30 miles away, where I used to interpret for the deaf.

Our focus in on being Christian, knowing the Bible, following Christ -- not on the denomination.

With that said, I do think that there are a number of denominations now who are so far away from Christ that Christian has almost become a courtesy title!

Huh? I think your misunderstanding my words Helen. Please take the time to ask for clarification. I try to read my Bible every single day, granted there are exceptions.

I agree with you though being a disciple of Christ is most important.

What I had said though- is if the Baptist faith is wrong (I don't believe its wrong) than the only other real possibility is to go in the other direction. The Baptist Faith basically draws reformation to a logical close. Thus if the Baptist faith was wrong, then you would be basically forced to go in the other direction. Granted you could stop anywhere along the way- Christian Reformed, Lutheran, Angelican, Orthodox.

 

I would either be E-Free or part of Calvary Chapel because of their focus on Biblical teaching and the power of God (not man) to make changes in the world. As a matter of fact, I am seriously considering Calvary Chapel. If, and when I make that change, I will be sure to update my profile so that I can no longer post in the Baptist Only Sections which means I will probably not post here anymore. I know, there is probably much celebrating at even the thought of it.

I would have to say that in order for me to be of another denomination other (than IFB), I would only change if another denomination was teaching something truer to the Holy Word of God, as we are commanded to follow Christ and not men. I do not believe once a Batist always a Baptist, I would change tomorrow if I thought that God would be pleased with that decision. Of course, I do not see that happening.

 

If there wasn't a baptist Church in a town I moved to - that's why I had to pick a new one- I'd probably look for a solid non-denom that is mainly Baptistic in doctrine.

 

Isnt' Calvary Chapel somewhat Pentecostal in belief? If they are, how would that influence your decision?

 

I consider myself Christian. Any church that uses God's word as it's final authority would be fine with me. That's my gage...Biblical adherance. And I've read it, so I know what that means.

If they are, how would that influence your decision? </font>[/QUOTE]As far as I know, their doctrine is Biblical and for the most part in line with Baptist Doctrine. They do believe in the Gift of tongues, but not meaning that it is for everyone or even that it should be something that has to happen. This would not bother me I don't think as long as they could show me Biblical support for their views. Like I said, I am still considering and studying their doctrines and comparing to what the Bible says. The major change for me would be their leadership style. But, then again, given what has been occurring in my Church for a long time and in the Convention, I am not so sure even that would differ that much.
