Job 23:13,14 -- But He is unchangeable ; who can oppose Him ? He does what He desires . He will certainly accomplish what He has decreed for me , and He has many more things like these in mind .

Ps. 115:3 -- Our God is in heaven and does whatever He pleases .

Ps. 135:6 -- The Lord does whatever He pleases in heaven and on earth , in the seas and all the depths .

Is. 14:24 -- The Lord of Hosts has sworn : " As I have planned , so it will be ; as I have purposed it , so it will happen . "

Is. 14:27 -- The Lord of Hosts Himself has planned it ; therefore , who can stand in its way ? It is His hand that is outstretched , so who can turn it back ?

Is. 43:13 -- " Yes, and from ancient days I am He . No one can deliver out of My hand . When I act , who can reverse it ? "

    Is. 46:10c --... " My purpose will stand , and I will do all that I please . "

Dan. 4:32 c -- ... the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of earth and gives them to anyone He wishes .

Dan. 4:35 -- All the inhabitants of the earth are counted as nothing , and He does what He wants with the army of heaven and the inhabitants of the earth . There is no one who can hold back His hand or say to Him , " What have you done ? "

Eph. 1:11 -- In Him we were also chosen , having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will .

    Proverbs 16:4

The LORD has made all for Himself, Yes, even the wicked for the day of doom.

I know. If you take any one of these verses and post them in their entire context, you'll see that God has no control over anything. ;)

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on His law he meditates day and night.

    from Psalm 1

Our pastor, his wife, and another couple were over to dinner last night. We were talking about Calvinism. We were all amazed anyone could believe such nonsense. But even aside from that, we had all noticed several other things: the arrogance and pride of so many Calvinists; their propensity for mockery of what didn't agree with them; and their tendency toward legalism.

By their fruits you will know them. We have seen the fruits of Calvinism. No thanks on the tree.

We'll take the Bible as it is read in a simple, straight forward manner.

If God has no control, then He is not God.

God does have control over all. He allows things, but that does not mean He does not have control.

"IF He is not Lord of all , He is not Lord at all . " Those were the last words of a staunch Arminian at a pulpit minutes before his death .

But getting back to what SFIC said , the Lord allows or permits because it is His will . Even very wicked things He can turn to His purposes .

Those are all great scriptures. Properly interpreted, they speak volumes. Dispensationally, they will be music to the ears for those sitting at the feet of the one they pierced, during the 1,000 year reign of Christ.

Oh. Well, I guess Calvinism isn't true then.

Helen said "We were all amazed anyone could believe such nonsense."

So who's mocking who. Granted, I should rise above all this, but the pot calls the kettle black when the kettle responds in-kind?

I've been taking this abuse from arminians, excuse me, "biblicists", for years. So I'm supposed to sit hear while arminians accuse me of every sort of blasphemy from hating people to having a mind full of satan?

"We all agreed...", as if God's ways were recommended to the church body for a motion and a second and pass by majority rule.

What amazes me is that I ever believed, as I did for 20+ years, the nonsense of arminian theology. And what's even more amazing, is God's ability to bring me out of it.

O.K., I'm calming down. I took that one too personal.

Do you all realize that John Wesley (an Arminian) and George Whitefield (a Calvinist) were actually able to go out and preach in revivals together?

And I believe people actually got saved.

Oh, and neither one of them had perfect theology. ;)

And God STILL blessed their efforts. How'd THAT happen?

The revival wasn't the 20th century variety Bob . You don't believe that anyone can " get up a revival " , do you ? The Great Awakening was what was taking place in the late 1730's and early 1740's in particular . Wesley , who Packer calls " an inconsistent Calvinist " ( the verdict is out on that assessment )was an exception to the rule among the preachers of that time . They were overwhelmingly Calvinistic to a man . As a matter of fact Whitefield had to part from Wesley because Wesley told him he was going to denounce the doctrine of election . Later Whitefield asked Wesley to officiate at his funeral . So they had some sort of mutual respect going for one another , but you can't have too much cooperation between two parties that are so different . For instance , a modern example might suffice . Dr. L-J and Billy Graham . The Doctor appreciated Graham but would not support Graham due to his error-filled ministry .

Has the Baptist Theology and Bible Study thread become the host for the defunct Calvinism-Arminian thread? It looks that way.

Moderators, please open up the Calvinist-Arminian forum again so all these people who like to argue this stuff can go there and leave us alone! They're taking over!

That would be a good thread. Maybe when I have time to breath (about 13 May) I'll ask the question: As flawed as Billy Graham was on some things (read: seperation) why did God still bless his ministry? Or, maybe, do you believe that God blessed? That would be another good question.

Anyway, I do think that "Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit." (James 5:17-18). So, yeah, I beleive we could see another Great Awakening in our life. Someone once said to D L Moody something like, "The world has yet to see what could happen if God thouroughly got hold of a man." D L tried to be that man.

    Maybe...

I am partly to blame in responding to Bob and Helen too , who did not comment on the substance of the OP . I really would like some feed-back on what folks think of the passages I posted on OUR God Reigns .

Acts 4:26-28 - "The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed'-- for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place."

    Our God reigns indeed.

I am wondering why you are asking Baptists what they think of the passages you posted. Of course, anyone who believes that the Bible is God's word would agree these statements are true. Only an Open Theist would disagree. So why do you want to know what people think? Are you expecting someone to disagree?

    I smell a hidden agenda.
