Outlook Express problems

    Last week I downloaded a "free" program from the Internet and started to have all kinds of problems. I could hardly log in to the Net. My email system went down. I can send but not receive. I am using Outlook Express. Any sugestions? :cool:

    If you're using Windows 98 it's probably too late to try scanreg/restore, as Win98 only backs up the registry for four-day periods. If it's Windows XP, I suppose you could try System Restore, which doesn't bgin deleting restore points until 90 days have passed.

    I haven't yet had an occassion to try System Restore, but the book I have on XP says to choose START &gt; HELP AND SUPPORT. Then, when the Help center appears, click "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore", etc. etc. If rewinding your system actually makes matters worse, you can reverse the Restore process by going into Help and Restore and clicking "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore" as before. But, instead of selecting "Restore my computer to an earlier time," select "Undo my last Restoration."

    If you're using Windows 98 and want to restore the registry -- something that I find to be just what was needed in most computer emergencies where rogue applications installed themselves -- go to START &gt; SHUTDOWN &gt; RESTART IN MS-DOS MODE &gt; OK. Then, type scanreg/restore. Press the ENTER key, select which of the four registry backups you want (by using the arrow keys), then hit ENTER. If all goes well, the screen will say "You have restored a good registry." However, since your problem began last week, it's probably too late to try scanreg/restore.

    Barnabas, I downloaded SypBot two separate times and had to uninstall both times. The first time I scheduled it to work at start up and their tech told me they had a problem with that. I waited a few months and installed it again and it interfered with Norton Anti Virus by hiding the subscription information. If you installed SpyBoy, you might try uninstalling that.

    Shucks, I'd uninstall whatever it was that you downloaded period.

    Are you using Norton? That will sometimes reconfigure your mail server. Call your ISP tech support and they can help you figure out what's going on.

    I installed Spybot a few days ago, and have had nothing but good experiences with it. It found all sorts of things on my computer of which I was unaware. After deleting most of those things, my browser is running much faster. You do want to be discerning about what you delete, though. Just because Spybot flags something as a "problem" doesn't necessarily mean it's something you want to delete.

    Thanks Diane and Mark for the info. I have a Windows 98 system. I did download Spybot and got it search for the Trojan horse to no avail. Did not find anything. :confused:

    But did you know that the program is not "free?" You can use it for 30 days, but if you want to keep it you will have to purchase the "key." Which is the one designed to find the trouble. The freeware is just for bells and whistles, but doesn't do anything. :(

    I also downloaded the updates in Microsoft Internet Explorer. But I still don't have emial capabilities. Tomorrow I will have to call Road Runner and see if they can help. Thanks for the tips though! [​IMG]

    I think I know your problem. One of the things SpyBot found on my computer was a Microsoft file. I checked on it to see why and what and it had a warning that to delete it would prevent me from checking mail through Outlook Express. I JUST remembered seeing that. Go into restore and look for it and restore all those things you deleted and I bet it will work.

    SpyBot didn't do anything for me. It gave me a clean bill of health... so it's probably a bogus. I did, however, uninstalled Outlook Express. Then went to Microsoft homesite and downloaded the latest MIE. Thought that it will the trick, but it didn't. :(

    At times the Internet browser works OK, but at times it just go into this search and find mode but cannot locate a thing. So it opens up pages by the dozen and when it reaches the limit, it freezes the computer screen. I can't do a thing about it, just pull the plug.

    So, in the mean while I am using my Yahoo mail account to keep in touch with the world. [​IMG] Unfortunately I have no time to call Road Runner to help, because you have to sit on the phone for hours... [​IMG]

    Sounds like it may be a virus rather than spyware. Do you have antivirus software, and have you updated the virus signatures and done a scan of the hard drive for viruses?

    If worse comes to worst you can always reinstall Windows.

    But in the meantime, when IE gets out of hand you might try CTRL + ALT + DELETE, make sure the webpage is highlighted, then click END TASK. Then, after IE closes down, restart it. Also, when you use CTRL + ALT + DELETE, make note of what programs are running. If there's something there that shouldn't be there, that could be the problem.

    I think Mark is right. Alarm bells say "virus, virus, virus". My suggestion is do a back up of all your important files, then zero the drive twice, re-install windows 98.

    Or better still, get yourself a new hard drive.

    Finally got saved all my files (on 50 floppys, and 4 CDs). Now I am ready to reboot Windows 98 on my computer. Daughter #1 said that it should do the trick, but may not. Last time she looked, she discovered that my IP addresses were changed by this mishap. That is why I do not receive emails, or cannot log unto the Net. She tried to change the address, but the window would not open. So, coming Saturday evening, she maybe successful and I'll have my fast computer back. [​IMG]

    Virus or no Virus, your first move should be to remove the big Virus, Microsoft Look Out. Download thunderbird from mozilla or something else free to read your mail and be done with using such an insecure email program. For that matter, most Windows operating systems could be classified a viruses and should be avoided also.

    My daughter just left, after fixing my computer, and it works like a charm. Interestingly, she did not have to reboot Windows 98 as previously planned. She just did something internally with the IP addresses, and now it works. However, she dowloaded the program, called Ad-Aware 6.0, and cleaned off over 250 spy-ware programs from the computer. Now it is clean, and PTL it works again! Thank you folks for all the tips, recommendations, and valuable suggestions. [​IMG]

    will using this programme remove spyware - and if so will it stop these horrid e.mails I`m getting so many of lately - virtually 100s a week.

    Unfortunately, they already have your email address, but the ad program will wipe out the spyware,,Spyware is very hard to get rid of...when you do it yourself, it looks like you got them, but you didn't...Iused spyware and about 300 unwanted emails eventually disappeared.

    I have simply stopped using Outlook Express and am using the freeware Pegasus Mail instead. I highly recommend it.
