Pants Or No Pants

My mom was one of of the sisters who used to say you should never wear pants to a service - she would wear them to church if she had to go up during the week.
Well, lo and behold, one Sunday last winter, I looked over after I walked in (late as usual from my duties as media center director) and guess what my mama had on! I surely thought one of two things was gonna happen - Lightening, or the clouds would open for the second coming. Neither!
Of course, she'd getting old and she might have just forgotten the greivous sin she'd proclaimed this to be at one time.

Where do I draw the line on 1st Corinthians 8:13? I'm not asking in jest either - because it seems that today, absolutely everything I do bothers someone. I could give a list, but surely you all understand what I'm saying here. Again, I'm not asking in jest. This is serious. If I cut my hair, if I don't cut my hair. If I raise my hand, if I don't raise my hand. If I wear pants, if I don't wear pants. If I wear a skirt to my knees, if it's below my knees. If I wear dress, if I wear a skirt. (or it's not me -- but some other poor soul - any poor soul) There always seems to be something hindering someone . . .

Now, I'm going to answer my own question - because it's not a light answer.
It's between me and God. When I am convicted by God that something I am doing may cause a brother or sister to stumble (like Paul's mention of the eating of meat), then I'll certainly submit and change.
I don't see any evidence in what's been said anyone else's is causing anyone to stumble in the wearing of pants. It looks more like personal worship choices are being made.

That's a very valid point, Bitsy. There are always going to be weaker Christians everywhere you go. And there will be times when we are the weaker Christians. The body of Christ can't totally erradicate weakness in the faith. It will always be there. Some Christian, some where across the globe, at any given time will always be making a spiritual mountain out of an irrelevant molehill and making doctrine where no doctrine is warranted.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people can get so hung up on non-essential things in our worship environment (no hats for men, no pants for women, length of hair, etc.) when there are so much more important things on which to focus such as our daily relationship with God and the people He created.

As I recall, Scarlett O. has mentioned that modesty is at the heart of the question concerning pants on women. Is it not also true that the issue may not just be pants or not, but whether or not ones attire is form fitting, or the type of material in ones clothing to be less than a proper covering and draws undo attention to ones physical body?
If God is going to judge the person due to the mere way one looks upon another, what does the list believe God will do to the individual who by their attire draw undue attention to the flesh by providing the means of temptation to lust? Certainly one can lust after a modestly dressed individual, but in that case it would seem to me to be clear on whom the sin lies, i.e., the one doing the lusting.

Well, here's what I think. Today, there are lots of women in American society who have been deemed as "beautiful."
- Pamela Anderson
- Brittany Spears
- Jessica Simpson
- Lindsay Lohen
- Paris Hilton
- Playboy playmates
This attribute called discretion, which is nothing more than making wise choices and judging the motives of others wisely, can make or break a woman's true beauty. Modesty, which has more to do with behavior than physical appearance, cannot be maintained without discretion or wisdom.
I submit that we, especially as Americans, have confused feminine beauty with overt sexuality and thereby eliminated the need for discretion in terms of what we call "beauty".
This is why, again, in my opinion, why we have so many perverted images and behaviors of the "beautiful" women in our society that completely deny any modesty.
Overt sexuality is potent all of the time with dire consequences. Look at the multi-billion dollar porn industry.
True beauty, not overt sexuality, is only potent when it is modest in thought and deed. Modesty is only cultivated through discretion.
