Does anyone know of a FREE parental control program.

I'm going to teach a basic computer class for low income folks in our hood and want to offer a free cdrom with free software on it. Ya, I know not only are they poor but they are about to be totally confused too - might take their minds off being poor.

I just looked through the 26 page  sticky thread and my eyes are bugged, but didn't notice one.

    thanks

I don't know of any either, exscentric. Parental control on the web at my house consists of my son goofing off in his myspace.com and me peeking over his shoulder a/o logging in later to see who he talked to and what comments they left each other. Works for me! ;)

Being sure that the computer is kept in a living room or dining room helps too. A kid alone in a bedroom with unlimited access to everything the internet has to offer is a bad idea!

Living room is on the list to cover  if they can't afford software.

Yes, the living room is simply the best defense. I was a teenager in the early days of the net and I remember the best deterrent I ever had (besides my own conscience) was the fact that my dad checked up on things regularly.

for what it is worth, there are some very good parental control option on the mac..free too. I am not aware of any for windows.

Did some searching late last night and found a number of shareware, and a freebie or two.

There is a free online service that tracks and sends you a report, not sure I like that one.

http://www.freeshield.com/ looks free, haven't installed it yet.

The more promising is Micro Soft has a beta out that is free - don't know if the final product will be or not, kind of sounds like it from what I read.

    http://ideas.live.com/programpage.aspx?versionId=a78d3383-8c23-4b95-a56c-b9967270629e for more info.

Still searching but not till later today.

How did Dale-C and saturneptune happen to make identical posts? HMMMMMmm? Are they long-lost identical twins, who haven't found each other?

I think that American Family Association (AFA) has parental controls built into their provider service.

I remember reading about a free service that emailed your history to an accountability partner (or parent in this case). I just don't remember the name... and can't think clear enough to phrase a search for it (four hours sleep in the past 52).

^^^ Thank God for the spell-checker in Firefox beta 2 or you wouldn't be able to read that.
