I have a friend who wants to get a cable modem and wanted to know if there was any software out there that would allow him to setup a password so that only his wife would be able to access the internet.

I looked around a little and so far all I've seen is something that monitors traffic and keeps porn out, it seems like he wants a little bit more.

I'm not sure if he's got XP, if so I thought I could set up his wife's acct w/a PW and then remove internet support from all other accounts.

Would a firewall provide this type of user-specific action?

    Thanks

Firewalls keep people from getting into your computer.

If he has xp and maybe others, you can set up accounts that require a password to even use the computer. Each time someone finishes they just log off and it is locked up till a proper account/password is entered.

Go to control panel, then double click user accounts.

Within that you then, I think, set up programs that are accessable, though not sure how, the help file MIGHT help, but don't hold your breath.

Well, I know that some firewalls will give you control over what data leaves your network as well (so somebody couldn't install a virus that sent back data that you didn't know about.)

I'm hoping he has XP or 2k or something that would allow me to do the accounts.

There are ways to limit which computers have internet access with most routers, user authentication doesn't really make it down to the home market for that stuff.

There are ways to do it in Windows I am sure, but it may require one of the professional or server versions, not being really well versed in PC operating systems, I am not sure.

In Linux you give everything permissions, so an individual user can be blocked from using any device, including access to the internet.

There are several very good commercial content filters out there that may have that type of functionality, but they are really designed more to block you from innapropriate content, rather than totally blocking your access.
