Pastor Resignation

What is the best way for a pastor to resign? Should he do it at a business meeting? Or should he do it after the morning worship? And what is the normal time notice that should be given to the church before he actually leaves?

I don't know that there is a right way or wrong way, but each time I resigned from a church, I consulted with the Board of Deacons. Only after this meeting, I made an announcement from the pulpit at a morning service and during the church bulletin announcements.

I don't think the time frame is important. What is your next appointment and when? Your present church will go through a search committee and they will take their time anyway.

It worked for me.

I do not have a next appointment as of yet, but I go in view of a call to a church in a couple weeks, and just trying to understand the correct process, if there is one. This will be the first time I have resigned from a church to move to another ministry.

Would definitely suggest private consultation with elders/deacons prior to ANY public announcement.

Problem? Yep. Henpecked Deacons immediately tell their wives and it's spread around the world before breakfast. Sad but true reality.

I always opted to meeting with deacons at that point during the SS hour, then AFTER the conclusion of the AM service make the public announcement.

Hello and please before I answer this. I am a lady and I am not trying to break into this talk between Pastors. I did want to tell you how it was done at our former church. First of all the church was small and the Pastor met with all the men after the morning service and it was a very long meeting. He gave them time to ask questions and then told them to go home and tell there wives and so they did. That night he resigned and gave a 30 days notice and he gave the women time to say things. We were a very close church and we loved this Pastor dearly so all that was said was words of Thanks.
