Rev Hashmel Turner, of First Baptist, prays in the name of Jesus at city council meetings, of which he is a member. Here is the story from VIRGINIA

Praise the Lord for a man who will stand up for what is right. [IMG]

    Saltcitybaptist,

I agree with you. We must be proud to pray in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Amen.....

I'm not sure what the big issue is with the story. Our city council meetings start with prayer every time. Clergy from the local community take turns doing the prayer. Since the prayer isn't actually part of the council session, it's a non-issue.

The ACLU predator has no teeth in this matter.

BTW, did anyone notice that this article was dated Oct of 2003? I believe that the ACLU has since gone away on this issue.

The reason I started this topic was beacuse of an short article I saw in the Syracuse Post-Standard, Sat 31 Jul. I did a quick search and found the web site I referenced above. It could be this issue has come up recently again. Maybe someone not as computer challanged as me could do an advance search to see what the "rest of the story" is.

I am not sure it is to be praised, or even correct, especially in a multicultural society. Certainly I believe that we can pray in no other name but Jesus, but that is for me, a Christian. It is not so for a Jew, a Muslim, and many other religions or non-religions which make up the cosmopolitan cities.

We do not live in a Christian society. We live in a secular society, and we ought to respect that.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Do you believe that is true, Jim? We are NOT a "christian" but a "secular" society?

I do not think the USA was/should be a "secular" society. As "In God We Trust" is still inscribed on coinage and prayers are given every day in the House and Senate, indication is that we still have vestiges of "christian" roots.

I would want to FAN THE FLAME of that.

The "in God we trust" included humanists, deists and certainly true Christians, but I really think that it is rather generic. It just isn't true in the sense that we, as Christians, would understand it.

From sea to sea, a Canadian motto was taken directly from scripture as well, but I would, by no stretch of the imagination, believe that Canada is a Christian nation.

Don't misundertand me. I would love to have a Christian nation. I love to declare what I believe to be the truth of God's word and make Jesus more than a curse word on the lips of all its citizens, but it isn't so. That is reality.

    Cheers,

    Jim

The Baptist Distinctive of individual soul liberty would be compromised if we lived under a government which mandated or respected only one official religious belief. Once the State goes that route, my right to choose in matters of faith and practice are usurped. I'm quite surprised how often the conservative community gets upset that the State forces society to wear seat belts, but would have no problem with the state forcing society to adopt Christianity.

But, that's all a bit off topic. Pastor Turner did nothing wrong. I believe the ACLU issue was dropped some time after the story was printed.

My question is this....Who do we strive to please: Man or God?
What would have happened if the disciples had obeyed the mandate of the Sanhedrin not to preach in the name of Christ?
Should Paul then have respected the "multicultural" nature of the city of Ephesus, and not proclaimed the name of Jesus Christ at every opportunity? (Certainly it would have been easier on him!)
I believe that if we are to be "salt and light" and obey the great commision, then we have no choice but to proclaim the name of Christ loud, long, and from the rooftops!
If this insults the world at large...so be it.
I was reading a letter from Pliny the Younger to the emperor of Rome recently, and what struck me was that Pliny wrote that true Christians would not renounce Christ, even when he tortured them. Yet in today's world we have a tendency to refrain from using the name of Jesus because it might offend somebody....Is there not something wrong with this picture?
