The estranged wife of a pastor claims her husband blended his professional and personal finances so thoroughly that his church should be counted as an asset in their divorce.
A judge agreed in a decision published this week to hear arguments on the claim, and he ordered a financial appraisal of the church. Lawyers said it could represent the first time anyone in New York state has tried to treat a religious institution as a marital asset.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071116...t&printer=1;_ylt=AqPg7U6_K5qpDlWoqpHJDBAuQE4F

I can See this setting a precedent that will not be good.

Absurd. The pastor doesn't own the church, does he? Is she going to ask for Jesus, since the church is His?

Sometimes a pastor does "own" a church. Every church must be diligent in its financial affairs and be sure that such a situation doe not infiltrate their church.

Well said, Salty. This is why Pastors, or any other single individule, should not control the chruch funds. If the Pastor has access to chruch funds then there must be alot of checks and balances to insure that the church's money and property belong to the chruch and not to any individual.

If the church is tax exempt, and the alligations in the article are true, both the husband and wife may have some legal problems after an audit.

This kind of conduct by some churches is causing the world to be suspicious of all churches.

Unbelievable. I so appreciate our pastor and the accounting practices at our church. They have an independent auditor check the books yearly to be sure it's all in order. The accounting staff is also made up of 3 full-time employees who check each other's work constantly (and they are not related! LOL)
