It amazes me that so many non SBCers have so many opinions about what SBCers "should" be doing. And how would you know anything about the core values in Texas, and if they are following them or not!!?

The SBC leadership says they want "peace" and then they go an interview Patterson.....yet another lie from the SBC. Patterson should be right at home.

I would be interested in Land as president here. Does anyone know his credentials?
Yes. He is currently Director of the SBC Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and adjunct prof at Southern. He holds a D.Phil. from Oxford, I believe. He was the college roommate to John Stassel of ABC news.

Us Conservatives are fine with it so it must be you and some of your friends who are still wanting to fight.

If Patterson becomes president at SWBTS, I might have to stay away from there for at least twenty years

I have never considered myself anything but conservative. If liking Patterson means one is conservative, I guess I am not.

I am not against conservatism. I just dislike Patterson.

Do you have sustainable, quantifiable proof that he is not repsected by "most" Texas Baptists? I think you know you're dancing with logical fallacy here.

Quantifiable proof?

What sort of proof are you describing? What standard do you require?

What I know:

1. Most Texas Baptists are still with the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT) which did not fall to the so-called “conservative resurgence” begun and orchestrated by Pressler and Patterson. Texans seem to know each other and too much about these two men to believe the accusations of “liberalism” that they were spinning back in the 1970s.

2. Patterson burned a lot of bridges in Texas during his time at Criswell College among those who generally support the “conservative resurgence”. Most Texas “conservatives” I have met don’t think very highly of him.

3. Texas “moderates” don’t like Patterson for all of the evil he has orchestrated in the SBC.

That being said, I’m kind of glad he’s coming to Texas. It will be a wake-up call to all those Texas churches who have straddled the fence for years about the so-called “conservative resurgence”. When Patterson comes to Fort Worth to take over Southwestern (the school that has desperately tried to convince Texans that it has not changed), the choices will be clear.

Texas Baptists don’t need the SBC to be effective in the world. The longer we try to retain ties to a Convention that is moving quickly away from biblical doctrine (for instance, the 2000 BF&M), the worse shape we are going to be.

Let him come and we’ll see what happens.

My reaction would be, "Sadly said."

If I believed the way you describe it, I'd be afraid of Patterson and the entire return-to-the Bible mentality now gripping the SBC, too. You cannot imagine how refreshing it is for the non-SBC to see God working in the convention in such a way!

I lived in Texas and simply disagree with your perspective . . and pray you are wrong in your opinion.

And assume you pray that I am wrong!!

1.) Quite a few of us don’t see it as a “return” to anything because Southern Baptists have never been where they are now. The so-called “conservative resurgence” is neither conservative or a resurgence – it is merely a fundamentalist “surgence”.

2.) We also do not believe it is a “mentality” that adheres to the Bible. Theologically, we do not agree that the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message is biblically sound. Furthermore, we believe that character is important. Lying, hatred, name-calling, threats, deception, abuse, etc. are not fruit of the Spirit and reveal the true nature of many of the Southern Baptist leadership. I never cease to be amazed that some of these people will claim that I don’t believe the Bible and then lie to my face in the same breath!

3.) I’m not afraid of any of the SBC leaders, including Patterson. I feel bad for the guy because there is coming a day when God will judge all of us and I’m concerned that Patterson will have a lot to answer for… :(

And assume you pray that I am wrong!!
You are correct. I am a native Texan and have lived and ministered in the state all my life. Patterson’s father was the pastor of First Baptist Church in Beaumont, Texas, for many years (near where I was raised) and the Patterson’s were well known. T.A. Patterson was revered, but his son Paige is decidedly much less revered in this state.

As far as Patterson coming to Southwestern, everyone has known for years that Patterson wanted the job and that the only reason Hemphill got the job was because the Dilday firing brought out so much anger in Texas Baptists because everyone knew that the trustees were blatantly lying about what went on. That was the first shoe to drop. Patterson’s presidency will be the second.

It will be interesting to say the least if Patterson does in fact take the position.

Baptist Believer, when I read your posts, I can't help but think that you have either been directly hurt or know someone who has been hurt by the SBC leadership. If so, do you hold any kind of grudge? It seems as though you do, but I don't want to read into a typed message without seeing expressions, etc.
