    Hi Gwyneth:

I think you are referring to their free online virus scan found at the following link:

    http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Trend-micro's free online scan is associated with PC-cillin. This free scan is up-to-date and definitely rivals the other name brand virus protection out there. As a matter of fact, this usually catches more stuff than the virus protection I have installed on our computers (even with the updates).

    Hope this helps.

There are several on-line sites that will virus scan your machine; but if you're looking for free antivirus software, you'll have to resign yourself to an older version of AVG Personal Edition (AntiVirus Guard 6, as opposed to the current version of 7 -- www.grisoft.com), or AntiVir (www.free-av.com), which I currently have running in conjunction with Norton on my computer.

I just haven't found any other free antivirus programs out there that are worth a flip.

And I absolutely hate Macafee's Viruscan. While Norton constantly scans just like Macafee, Macafee kept interrupting all my open programs with its scanning. Norton and AntiVir at least are running in the background, and I can't tell they're running.

    Don,

Is there someting about Norton that is lacking? I ask because you are running anti-vir alonside it? Is that just extra protection or does Norton miss somethings?

No, I believe Norton is better; I just had AntiVir running first, and haven't uninstalled it. I'm also not as familiar with AntiVir, so I'm running it as a comparison (i.e., waiting to see if Norton catches something it misses, or vice versa).

Plus, I recently found out that the free version of AVG wasn't catching certain viruses, and have found two different viruses on my computer within the last month. So I'm a little paranoid.

Hey Don... let me recommend a simply awesome antivirus program, and, its free... its called Avast! Home Edition, you have to register, and they send you a serial number, but that is it, it has great email protection, and is a resident (live) function, as well as constant updates... I have used antivir and AVG, Avast! is simply a better and more thorough prog... I also use another free program because my daughter chats on AOL, Yahoo and MSN, it is BitDefender, and has modules written specifically for each of these programs....

Avast! Home edition is at http://www.asw.cz/i_kat_67.html

    and BitDefender is at http://www.asw.cz/i_kat_67.html

BitDefender also has a standalone antivirus as well (BitDefender Free Edition) but I am not sure how thorough it is....

let me know if you try these and they help... also, how is it that you run more than 1 antivirus at a time? most of the time, that really crashes computers.... I know if you tried to do Avast and AVG, or, at least I am pretty sure, there would be serious problems... do you disable the resident function of one of the progs?

    blessings

    j_barner2000,

I downloaded the free versions from Computer Associates. Awesome!!! My old AV had ran out, and was completely useless, but the firewall was still up. I had to uninstall to use this one, but it works like a charm. Thanks for the info!

    In Christ,
    Trotter

God gave me the position on the software licensing desk for a reason... I have ample chance to witness and also help my Brethren with what I can... [IMG] :D
