Anticipating some problems with the other thread in which this article is posted, I would like to get people's impressions of what I said regarding biblical support for Peace and Social Responsibility.

    I'll bite.

    From your article:

How about the mandate "Thou shalt not steal?"

If God acknowledges the right of private property (without which the command is meaningless) then it,s just as wrong to steal by electing a public official who will plunder your neighbors goods and redistribute them to you as it is to steal by fraud, robbery, coercion, or just good old-fashioned theft. Basically, the liberal (Socialist) approach to poverty is to sanction government sponsored stealing.

Sorry, I just can't get into the liberal kumbayah agenda today. There's an election going on. And a war on terror to be fought. And babies being murdered in the womb. I gotta go clean my gun now.

A commandment that isn't respected by many US corperations?

Whoa, stop right there... what if what is being stolen is a public resource, such as good water, clean air, public education, low-cost healthcare, fair wages, affordable housing, etc? The wealthy have gotten away with restructuring the economic and political lanscape for their own benefit; what about those of the lower and middle classes who have been fleesed?

Methinks you are reading capitalism into the Word... beware.

Redistibution... or fairer distribution? Those at the bottom have been abandoned by those who have grown wealthy off of exploiting numerous inequalities in our interconnected society! Why do you consider it theft to help others? As people are in need... why do you not want to help them?

Oh, and liberalism and socialism are quite different. Again, you're reading something into Social Responsibility that isn't there.

Can't be bothered to think of the least among us? What would Christ say?

So you're going over to Iraq right now?

Not according to Exodus, but I digress.

    Another wedge issue... sigh.

As you and others have suggested that the other thread be closed down, I opened this one in hope of discussing the main points of my article, and NOT the wedge issues that ya'll can't seem to get over.

What are "wedge" issues to you may not be "wedge" issues to us. [IMG]

As those in power would like you to think. Meanwhile, they bleed all of us dry while we squabble.

    Anyway... about Social Responsibility...

Seems to me you're the only one with any squabble. No mattter what answers you get you move your float & sink your bait a bit deeper.

You ask for opinions & that's what you're getting, like them or not!

You aren't gonna find too much support for your (IMHO) liberalizing of God's word.

I was hoping on some well-informed answers. I guess I was mistaken.

Methinks I need to go back to God's Word for a liberal position.

    Why shut down debate?

What is so threatening about loving thy neighbor and taking care of the least of us?

Social responsibility is primarily a personal issue, not a government one. The government has no business taking money from me by force and giving it another person. Rather, it is my responsibility to be a good steward of what God has blessed me with and help those in need - voluntarily.

Exactly. The government needs to do some well placed surgery on itself and gut itself of about 80% of its spending.

Trouble is, those on the right side of the political spectrum contribute the LEAST of anyone... which indicates that given the choice, you would abandon those in need. Now, as 'your' money is a social construct based upon public maintainence anyway, let's not be too possessive.

First off, prove your point. I doubt you can.

Second off, you have no right to accuse me of abandoning anyone in need. That is mighty judgmental on your part, pardner. And, again, you can't prove your accusation toward me. You have slandered me.
