Spiritually dead means seperated from God, not dead like a lifeless corpse. If our soul was dead in that manner, we'd be dead completely. Even though our inner man is dead due to sins, it functions in regards to keeping our heart beating, our lungs inhaling and exhaling, our kidneys filtering, etc. So we are dead in sin, meaning seperated from God due to sin.

Our sins have seperated us from a holy God. Eventhough Jesus was sinless, when He bore all our sins on the cross, God had to withdraw from Jesus, because Jesus had "become" sin in that manner.

Man receives salvation just one way.....by Grace through faith. God gives us the faith to believe, but we must accept this gift for it to profit us whatsoever.

Death causes separation. When we are physically alive, we are "with" others, we have relationships. But when we are physically dead, our relationships end, we are no longer with others.

When Adam sinned, it caused a spiritual and physical separation from God, he died spiritually that very day, and was tossed out of the garden, physically separated from God.

So being spiritually dead means we are separated from God. Next, the dead cannot reestablish those relationships they enjoyed while alive. So to be spiritually dead means a person can do nothing to reestablish a relationship with God.

Now where we part company is does this condition of being spiritually dead also include the inability to seek God, to desire to establish a relationship, and to strive to obey His direction that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. This is where, in my opinion, Calvinism goes too far, and makes an assertion not backed up scripturally.

Paul tells us of two kinds of people in Romans 9:30-33 that are striving to establish a relationship with God, one group by works and one group by faith.
Clearly then, some folks who are spiritually dead desire to be saved, and these are the people who "will" and "run" to be saved. But their salvation does not depend on their willing or running, but on God who has mercy on whom He has mercy.

Bottom line, the idea that being spiritually dead means a person is unable to understand and respond to the gospel is unbiblical as demonstrated by verse after verse after verse. But only God can make a person "alive together with Christ" transferring a person from the realm of darkness into the kingdom of God. And He makes this choice because He and He alone credits the worthless faith of spiritually dead people as righteousness.

If you are speaking of the definition of spiritually dead, then it's definition must be consistent with other passages speaking of being dead in the spiritual sense.

Just as the non-believer is dead IN our .. the believer, says the scriptures, IS dead TO sin.

Thus in the same manner that we interpret dead for sinners we must consistently keep it such for the believer as well. However we note in scripture that while BEING dead TO sin, it also states we should also consider ourselves as dead to it. In one passage we are, but we still must remember to 'stay' dead to it. Thus the implication is that though dead, we are still able.

As such the term dead, regarding spiritual, does not mean unable, but means separated. We are dead to God (separated from Him and thus life) just as the believe is dead to sin (separated from it).

There is also another point I would address. You only give 2 options when in fact there is another.

1. Totally spiritual dead unable to even respond to God by ourselves? (wooden literal - no ability or functionality); or

2. , or able to respond by our own volition?
...since you give no qualified it seems the intent of this statement is to be able to respond apart from God's working upon them)

3. God enabling all man, through the revealing work of the Holy Spirit, to respond of our own volition.
