Pet Blessing

I was just listening to the local radio station and the Catholic Church in town has announced that they will have a “pet blessing” this Sunday. Just bring your pets down to the church and the priest will bless them. Now we live in the mountains and bear season is coming up, but I never heard of blessing a pet let alone a church wide “pet blessing.” Is this something they do other places?

Yes, this is a common celebration amongst many Catholics.

In the Catholic church, St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals. In celebration the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, on October 4, annual pet blessings are going on all over the place.

It is as about as stupid as a church here that has a biker's Sunday and the pastor annoints the bikes with oil.

Now that's a smart Baptist Church, blessing the bikes so that they stay running and safe. Everything should be given a blessing once in a while. It helps to keep evil and sin away.

Maybe you need to read the bible some more about relics.

The lady that got healed by merely touching the bottom edge of Jesus's robe. The robe is just like the motorcyle. God can pour his healing and protective power over any article.

The use of the bones of Elisha brought a dead man to life: "So Elisha died, and they buried him. Now bands of Moabites used to invade the land in the spring of the year. And as a man was being buried, lo, a marauding band was seen and the man was cast into the grave of Elisha; and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood on his feet" (2 Kgs. 13:20-21). This is an unequivocal biblical example of a miracle being performed by God through contact with the relics of a saint!

Similar are the cases of the woman cured of a hemorrhage by touching the hem of Christ’s cloak (Matt. 9:20-22) and the sick who were healed when Peter’s shadow passed over them (Acts 5:14-16). "And God did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them" (Acts 19:11-12).

If these aren’t examples of the use of relics, what are? In the case of Elisha, a Lazarus-like return from the dead was brought about through the prophet’s bones. In the New Testament cases, physical things (the cloak, the shadow, handkerchiefs and aprons) were used to effect cures.

I REMEMBER AS A CHILD IN MY CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, THERE WERE A LOT OF WOMEN THA HAD HUSBANDS THAT WERE DIE-HARD SINNERS. THE WOMEN WOULD BRING A HANKERCHIEF TO A SERVICE. IT WOULD BE ANNOINTED WITH OIL AND THEN PRAYED OVER(BLESSED). THE WOMEN WOULD THEN TAKE IT HOME A PLACE IT UNDER THE FITTED SHEET WHERE THE HUSBAND'S UPPER BODY WOULD BE OR PLACE IT INSIDE THE PILLOW CASE. THEY DID THIS BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED IN THE TRANSFERRENCE OF GOD'S POWER FROM PRAYER TO HANKERCHIEF AND ULTIMATELY TO THE HUSBAND, THAT HE MAY SEEK GOD.

Please don't sell short the power of God to effect the physical things in our life.

Satan and his angels are everywhere, there are very few limits and boundaries for them. A few years ago, my Ignorant fundamentalist parents gave me a KJV study bible. They annointed it with oil and blessed it. You have a problem with blessing a Bible as well?

While we're at it, I don't see anywhere in Scripture we are told NOT to stand on your head during worship service. I think I'll give it a try this Sunday...

And I can't find in the Bible where we are to put a decorated tree duing Christmas either, but we do it anyway. And I don't see in the Bible where you are told to set up Nativity sets either for christmas but you do that anyway.

The Bible is God's Word. At least you got that part right. You think that because a piece of paper has scripture inspired by God on it, it is already blessed? Do you think God pours his spirit onto each Bible as it comes off the assembly line. I don't find this in the Bible.

Here's the prayer. Make up your own mind of its worth.

"Blessed are You, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth the fish in the sea, birds in the air, and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. Bu the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise You for Your beauty in creation. Blessed are You, Lord our God, in all Your creatures! Amen."

I could care less about any RCC prayer for pets. What I do care about is stupid mentality that God does not affect physical things.
