I love my large print tniv, but wanted the niv2011 also for some comparing.

I like to get a wide variety of translations and also of study and devotional Bibles. I like being able to quickly find out what a specific teacher or even denom teaches about a passage. Doesn't mean I have to agree with them, just know what they teach.

I decided for the niv2011 to get Jimmy Carter's Life Lessons Bible.

I'm far more politically conservative than I believe him to be, but it may turn out collectable and had the version I wanted.

I haven't had it too long, but I'm finding many of the articles and sidebars in it to be pretty close to the "old" SBC teachings......neither fundamentalist nor liberal.

I'm sure I won't agree with his every jot and tittle of commentary, but I'm pleasantly surprised and find myself turning to it fairly often.

Carter is right in line with what I saw at HBU and Baylor. HBU had a regular practice of publishing the horoscope even under the conservative resurgence led by a conservative president at the university. Baylor openly hires non-Christians.

Actually I'm finding the comments and sidebars far more conservative than I expected.....given that I was already aware of his rather liberal views in the press.

I do agree he is about as liberal as they come.

But in most of the articles referenced, he is saying what he expects will happen, or what he thinks the populace wants. That isn't the same as promoting it.

Still, since I expected flaming liberal comments in the study Bible, I'm pleasantly surprised that so far I haven't run across any.

I would be interested in other opinions on this but I cannot figure out why Zondervan decided to take on this project. The only thing I can think of is that Zondervan is at war with their core customer group and this is one of their offensive battles.

Think about it, the NIV is marketed to Evangelicals. Evangelicals who are responsible for the bulk of Bible sales are not going to buy a Jimmy Carter Study Bible. Likewise, liberals are not going to spend money on Bibles of any configuration. So who is going to buy them? What is their target audience?

As much as I like the NIV (1984), it is hard to imagine why a company would discontinue the best selling translation for a revision that is responsible (right or wrong) for the creation of several new competing translations (ESV in particular) and that has no chance of maintaining it's #1 spot in the market.

I understand that Zondervan publishes more than Bibles and is part of a huge publishing enterprise but how can the Jimmy Carter Study Bible, which I believe will be a high profile sales fiasco help Zondervan with its core mission? A political favor makes sense here for there is little theological benefit in such a product. Unless you want to irritate your fellow SBCer, there is no one who will tuck such a volume under their arm and proudly prance into Sunday School.

I'm no big fan of the ESV but Crossways has to be credited for their agressive and long term marketing plan that seems to be working at the expense of the NIV family of products. I'm not ready to dig the NIV's grave but I believe the market is already past saturation with both translations and specialized editions. Again, my opinion but what I think the market really needs and wants are Bibles that are easy to transport and have premium and or long lasting bindings, not so much targeted inspirational study notes, charts and maps.

I cannot for the life of me imagine caring at all what study Bible SOMEONE ELSE carries into SS.

It IS their life, after all.

My point is that why should it matter should someone "prance into SS" with this or any other Bible.

Shoot, we've had folks "prance into SS" with the JW's translation. We didn't get insulted, we were happy they came cause we could get a chance to give them the truth.

If we've gotten to the point in the SBC that we get insulted if someone brings a Bible we don't like, we've got more problems than the heathens!

    Not to insult!

My point, which went right over your head is that every SS class has their liberal smarty pants (one who knows the truth but perfers to ignore it) who is the source of irritation to all and would be the person most likely to show up with a Jimmy Carter Study Bible simply to get a reaction out of everyone else.

Not to change the subject but would you be kind enough to explain to me the relationship between Jimmy Carter and the SBC?

Every church has practical atheists too. They claim to have conservative theology and live like atheists--as though there is no God.

What about a study Bible from divorced men--Charles Stanley and Charles Ryrie?

Ok, lets all run out and buy a Jimmy Carter Study Bible because Charles Stanley's wife divorced him! Yea!

In a sane world, the names Charles Stanley and Charles Ryrie would not appear in the same sentence with Jimmy Carter.

You are right. Carter is happily married while Ryrie and Stanley are divorced. Carter was pres. of the U.S. and Stanley was pres. of the SBC.
