Police Liability Insurance

Article says,
In a sensible world where we required officers to carry professional insurance and their premiums proportionately reflected their likelihood of committing official misconduct, there’s a good chance to think he would have been priced out of the market long before this happened.

Except that the people who are being policed are likely going to complain about the police regardless of how good of a cop they are. Those complaints against him may or may not have been legitimate so then what is wrong with the brass over a cop, who do internal investigations, is anything wrong? Maybe nothing. How can you compare lawbreakers complaints of rough police treatment with doctors or lawyers whose patients and clients are paying money to service their needs? It is not a legitimate comparison. How about an occupying military, now should they also carry liability insurance to deal with the hurt feelings of the enemy combatants?

I agree. There would have to be a way to take into account the veracity of any complaints by those who may have broken a law before a complaint could be charged to a peace officer’s account.

Not unless the employer pays for it.
I’ve been covered by malpractice liability insurance since I began working in the nursing profession more than 40 years ago.
Most employers cover nurses under with their own separate plan: it protects the employer and the business but the nurse can purchase their own in addition to it.
The benefit is the plan protects me with legal representation focused on me rather than on the business.

About 10 years ago an exercise physiologist at another facility had a problem requiring legal representation (not that unusual). The nurse did not have coverage. From that time on they required malpractice insurance (I would only provide proof of my insurance if they payed for it, which they agreed to).

Cops are probably covered by their employer already, particularly since it is a municipal job.
Union police are covered by their union.
But it probably would be smart to have individual coverage.
