Poll results: Which bible for devotions?

    In the past, people have cited poll results and said that it was an indication that the KJV was was still used more than any other translation. I believe this is just because a lot of churches still use the KJV (nothing wrong with that [​IMG] ).

    So I decided to see what the majority use in their "personal devotions the majority of the time". Here are the results:

    I have adopted the NKJV as my usual bible. but I certainley find the NASB quite helpfull also. Christians can get led away into the KJV only idea, only to research the groups that are pushing this wheelbarrow to find there are many inconsistancies. KJV onlyism is a cult. Yet this should not detract from those who genuinley prefer the KJV.

    It looks to me that you have a virtual tie between NKJV, KJV, NIV, and the NASB. To me this is not a clear indication of which translation is being used predominantly. I did not participate in your poll. However, if I would have done that, I would have chosen the KJV (and I am not even a KJVO person). :D

    I always use the NASB for reading and always
    include it in my personal studies. It is not per-
    fect in its translation, but it comes closest in
    what I have seen so far.

    My regular bible is the KJV, mainly because of my age and familiarity with it. All my old reference books relate to the KJV.

    I refer to about 17 different versions in study and lately I have been using the Reader's Digest Bible (taken from the RSV) in daily devotions. I just like the style.

    When I read from my KJV in the pulpit and sermons, I generally convert the thee's, thou's and word changes at the time.

    I think there is something to be had from all the versions. I do remember well the controversy over the RSV when it translated "maiden" for "virgin". This too passed away.

    Thanks for pointing that out Barnabas.I have to agree. The NKJV, KJV, NIV, and the NASB are very popular bibles. Which one is used the absolute most by Americans?

    Well, some statistics show that the NIV is preferred 3 to 1. And the most surprising thing is, the NIV is mostly used by Baptists. (At least, that was surpirsing to me!)

    Based on statistics, the KJV seems to be losing popularity with the newer generation, as most of the new generation prefers the NIV.

    This makes me think: if generation X is preferring the NIV, then in fifty years, will the KJV become like unto "the Geneva Bible"? Only time will tell.... [​IMG]

    Appreciate the time and energy given to come up with these stats and the good comments on it. As I've said on other places (but only newly returned after a year's absence on the Versions Forum here) I see all of these versions every day</font>
    • Personally grew up/memorized the KJV</font>
    • Love the NKJV since it eliminates archaisms</font>
    • Preach to a church that is 80% NIV and 15% NASB</font>
    I think that my situation may be normative, not exceptional.
