What did John N. Darby (1800-1882), a Church of England priest, later a Plymouth Brethern
    pastor, start?

(at least i'll try to set it up that way,
you can't change this post after the conditions
are set). Check the first post to verify this.

I checked it. You can read the results
of the poll before voting. The right answer
as far as i can tell is that John N. Darby invented the "secret rapture". All the other
doctrines appear to have been developed over
time by Bible students (and supported by
    Bible study). But the "secret
rapture" that split the Plymoth Brethern was
    started by Darby.

    BTW, IMHO the pretribulation rapture/resurrection
will be a noisy affair -- loud enough to
    wake the DEAD ;)

The poll so far seems to indicate that he is the father of dispensational doctrine. I will check again later on.

Regarding your 5th point, are you questioning if Darby is the father of this also?

Really, loud enough to wake the Baptists? :D </font>[/QUOTE]Tee hee. Yes, even wake dead baptists.

Somebody asked me how many people worked in my
Baptist Church. I had to say [IMG] oh,
    about 10% [IMG]

Well now that I've said I am ignorant about Darby, that is I have no first hand knowledge of his theology,I suppose I will have to go ahead and read about this fellow.
I've heard on the board here that Darby is respnsible for everything from dispensationalism to the vacuum cleaner so I guess I will find out for myself.

You guys, it's 90% committees and 10% workers this formula was originally worked out by a former phone company executive.

DICTIONARY OF PREMILLENNIAL THEOLOGY (Kregel, 1996), page 83, the artile on Darby, John Nelson:

"Acknowledged father of modern dispensational premillennialism. Darby is remembered especially for his recalling the church to expectancy for its rapture at the return of the Lord before Daniel's Seventieth Week."

I could not vote. Haven't studied Darby the man. He may have "started" something but what I think is more likely is that he "started" the church to thinking of the Imminent Return of Christ again as Mr. Ed has said.

I think he started that fast food chain where they sell the roast beef sammiches. They have that horse raddish sauce (Darby's Sauce). It's really pretty nasty but there are no Hardy's resturants out here in W. Tex.

    Lacy

    PS. Darby's is different.

Thought the Apostle Paul started the secret rapture when he confided to a church that the Lord was coming for them and for the dead.

    My mistake. ;)

I've often seen messages where people did not sign their name.

Paul, your's is the first one to sign the name with no message.

Now Dr. B, you know better than to plagarize without giving credit. [IMG]

I remember reading of an ol preacher who used to get hate mail from his hearers. One such letter was simply signed, "Fool". In the next week's sermon he noted the letter with the following comment, "I am accustomed to receiving anonymous letters. This is the first time I received one where the writer signed his name but forgot to include his message." (or something like that)

Didn't Paul believe that Jesus was going to return during his own life-time, or at least very shortly?

Dispensationalism but it would have mercifully died without the Scofield Reference. [IMG]

If I could REMEMBER who said that - I'm thinking Moody but not sure - then I'd be happy to give credit.

Just showing how foolish some folks' posts can be.

Mine included way too often!!
