Pop goes the sleep tight

    Whoops - I meant to post this in the triva thread....

    The expression "Pop goes the weasel" comes from spinning and measuring yarn. Skeiners have a piece of wood called a "weasel". After you turn the skeiner so many times, a screw pushes the wood far enough to pop out, making a sound. This lets you know you had finished measuring X number of yards of yarn.

    The expression "sleep tight" comes from the time when people used a web of rope to support their mattresses instead of box springs. The rope stretched over time, so you frequently had to pull the rope and re-knot it to make the web tight once again.

    The expression "bar and grill" originally had nothing to do with grilling food. The grill referred to a wooden grill that was built on top of the bar (slats of wood with an opening below for passing drinks to the customers). It protected the bartender when fights broke out.

    As far as I know, nobody knows the origin of the expression "Heavens to Betsy".

    I can't think of any more off hand. Roger McGuinn's testimony (or at least the one I heard him tell) is pretty entertaining. He said he was at a friend's place smoking pot, and when he reached under a table to get the bowl of pot he came across a little book entitled "Good News for Modern Man". So he thought, "Hey, I'm a modern man, and I could use some good news." So he started reading it.

    He felt ripped off at first the it turned out to be the Gospel of John. But that was what got him thinking, and the rest, as they say, is history. Well, not well-known history, because I don't think he told much more during that interview. ;)

    Actually, Jim/Roger McGuinn wasn't the only Byrd to be a Christian.

    Chris Hillman (as well as his partner in crime, Herb Pederson) is a Christian.

    There are many accounts that say the late Gram Parsons was a Christian.

    Patricia Heaton, and Alice Cooper are both Christians who have shown up on the pages of BaptistBoard lately.

    3/4 of the band, Kansas.

    Joe Bob Briggs. Up until recently, Joe Bob, when not showing slasher movies on TNT, wrote a column called "The Exegete" for The Door magazine.

    Really? I was under the impression he wasn't, based on an interview I read some time ago.

    I didn't know that, but I should have suspected.

    Great list! Lots of people I didn't know were Christians.
