Pope wants EU to call itself Christian

Personaly I don't think ANY country or political unit has the right to call itself christian. God's kngdom is not of this world. Good that countries/states can honestly recognise the contributions of christians and others in their history, but no nation on earth is christian.

Some of the 'churches' aren't even christian.

One of the worst things that ever happened to Christianity was when it became the Roman recognised national religion. Evangalism went down the toilet in places etc etc.

People often comment on the growth of Islam, do they realise that everyone born in an Islamic country is considered to be Islam in faith. I can see the pope being keen to establish the same thing in the EU, but ultimatley it can work against you. To be a Christian, you must make a choice, not be born into it.

 

I would doubt it. The EU is far from becoming a world government, let alone a world religion.

As for living in a Christian country, I'm flatly against theocracies, whether it's the US, or elsewhere. On the other hand, I'm also in favor of people ruling themselves as they see fit, without undue outside influences.

 

Ben W, I am not sure you can say that Roman recognition of Christianity was a terrible thing. It certainly was not for the Christians of that day. If that had not happened who knopws about Europe becoming populated with Christains and handing the faith down to American and Australia. Europe is certainly had its backsliding since the 1700's, however, it seems that Roman recognition of Christianity wasthe will of God. IMHO that is.

 

Mark, in some of the studies ive done on church history, it is alledged that when this occured, Evangalism went down the toilet.

 

Separation of church and state has been a GOOD thing. It is our historical baptist heritage. The pope should wake up and come on board with that and other baptist positions.

 

When the Pope uses the word "Christian" is he referring to the born-again, bible-believing Christian or ........the other kind.

 

Catholics associate Christianity with themselves. It was a pretty pointless move on his part if you ask me, but then again, he's very old and could be getting senile.

Well I have now decided to call myself rich, that has no bearing on the reality of the situation, but it sure makes me feel better. Probably the same logic is being played out by the Pope.

 

this is quite interesting - given that there is no seperation of church and state in a number of EU countries it would seem to make sense - in the UK, for example, the Church of England is the 'official' church and bishops sit in the legislature.

I think it is unlikely that it will happen though - the EU does not want to be seen as a white christian only club - especially in given the pressure that the USA is putting on them for Turkey to be admitted (which is a fairly long way off IMO)
