What was the cause of the wreck?

speed? Yes railroads actually have speed limits for certain areas in the rail lines?

drugs? Possible but not probable

other? Ie a broken rail? Sabotage?

How the spill was handled is a whole different matter, and not necessarily the fault of the RR

Not sure now, but up until the early 2000s, the RR automatically waived jurisdiction on accidents to local authorities ie Fire, Police, Environmental entities ie regulators like EPA (who know nothing, seriously they are bloated bureaucrats) or Emergency Responders(think environmental cleanup companies) who are the true cats-along with fire fighters who know what’s going on.

while controversial, most times a fire is the easiest and best way to handle the types of emergencies.

Fires do irritate the lungs and can cause disease like lung disease, eye problems. That’s just the reality which is sad, but these chemicals are used in everything we do ie, cars, air conditioning etc.

The real problem is the run off of the unturned chemicals, and how they get into the ecosystem.

Runoff into creeks causes fish kills, livestock death and livestock abortions as well as sickness (think you cannot eat the meat)

The ground actually absorbs the chemicals like a sponge saturating it with rain further softening the ground eventually driving the chemicals down into drinking water.

hopefully, they all just didn’t go stupid on this issue and started immediately digging up impacted areas of ground where it actually spilled and w

And we’re able to dig most of it up and treat it by hauling it somewhere for disposal or maybe Emelle Alabama.

Of course, there may have been some to actually get to the aquifer and contaminate drinking water. In which case people or farmers using well water would have to get the groundwater treated or new wells somewhere out of the way of the direction of groundwater flow. Treating contaminated groundwater is very expensive and can take years

example
typically if have say 10,000 gallons of contaminated water, you will need to treat 25-30K gallons of water.

you can also treat it as is through air sparring (injection) and air evacuation.

treating contaminated soil and water can take years. As in 20 or so but that is doubtful the case in this situation.

I did forget about drunkenness.

my father was a railroader and in several wrecks.

had he, or about 8-9 of his friends been on the train, I would go with this one with my father being head drunk. Although Butch, Red, or Skip giving him a run for his money.

had I been on the train it would have been between my father or I.

personally, I was an Environmental Engineer back in the day for over 10 yrs and worked several train emergencies and specialized in emergency responses and groundwater investigations

Thanks for reading the dissertation
