Has anyone out there attended the "Possum Drop?" My family and I went to Brasstown, NC for New Years, and they have this family-friendly celebration (no alcohol) and it was really fun! New York drops the Ball, Atlanta has the Peach Drop--well, North Carolina has the Possum Drop! It was hilarious. They don't hurt the Possum (yes, it is alive!). They hoist it from a crane and slowly lower it to the ground at midnight.

There's lots of other stuff, too--the local Baptist pastor asks a blessing on the New Year, and the church choir led the crowd in a sing-a-long of all the old hymns. There were fireworks, and food, and all kinds of stuff.

It was small town America at its best!! We all had a great time.

I am sure people in my neck of the woods would have been out in mass for this type of event as well...

How neat! My parent's lived about a mile from Brasstown for 4 or 5 years. We would visit up there once or twice a year. We all wanted to go but never did! Wish we could have! :(

Rachel--I wish you could have, too! My aunt and uncle retired to Tusquittee, NC (couple of miles from Brasstown) from Central FL--they worked for 30 years for NASA. That's how we found out about the Possum Drop.

It's near Murphy and Franklin really close to the GA line. The possum they "drop" is tame, however. They let the little kids come up and pet it! Now that will really make your toes curl. :D

Yes, I think it's a mountain thang, for sure! I never liked possums, probably because the only ones I had ever seen were road kill. But live ones are kinda cute. [IMG]

Baby ones, ok. But the adult ones <shiver> have got some wicked looking teeth! I heard their breath is pretty bad, too. I won't get close enough to confirm that last statement! lol

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. lol

In En Zed they HATE Ozzie possums coz Ozzie possums kill their favourite cutie bird the KIWI.

Yep I have seen possum skins tack on boards with wheel marks on them for sale to Ozzie tourists.....

I don't think possums here kill anything!! The only time you ever see them is when they are dead on the road.

Maybe I should suggest to the possum drop people that they sell possum skins with the wheel marks at the Possum Drop! They could raise money for next year!
