Has anyone here read either of these two books:

Preaching with Purpose - Jay Adams

    or

    Preaching with Freshness - Goldsworthy

Both were recommended to me recently...

The Adams book is good. However, for a first book on the subject, I would recommend David Martyn Lloyd-Jones book "On Preaching and Preachers." What is of interest here is the fact that Lloyd-Jones was a medical doctor by training. But, he followed G. Campbell Morgan in the pulpit of Westminister Chapel. He covers alot of ground, both the art and practice of preaching and sermon preparation.

I would recommend both. I read extensively in this area and find both to be good. I would especially recommend a new book bearing the title "Preaching with Freshness" written by Bruce Mawhinney. The forward is by Jay Adams.

"Preaching and Preachers" is a book I re-read at least once every six months. It is outstanding. As for a first book, I might recommend "On the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons" by John A Broadus. A good contemporary first book to read would be "Power in the Pulpit" by Jerry Vines (Moody).

Go check out "Steps to the Sermon" by Al Fasol. It is excellent for beginners and veterans alike.
