Preaching the Church Calendar

    I would humbly beg to differ on this point. We have fairly solid scriptural suppport for these days. If you would read the Gospel accounts of the last week, the days listed follow the accounts. Unless you are taking the position that</font>
    • Palm Sunday: The Messiah did not enter Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.</font>
    • Maundy Thursday: Our Lord did not command a time of rememberance aka the Lord's Supper.</font>
    • Good Friday: Our Savior never hung on a cross. </font>
    As Anglo-American Baptists, we have severe allergic reactions to anything that smells of popery. Now, good men can quibble about if the crucifixion was on Good Friday or Good Thursday. But the fact is the events remembered on the days mentioned took place. We would do well if we remembered them and not be afraid of them.

    Working with the EC-Baptists, I find that preaching the calendar opens up opportunities to preach on foundational truths. What is a better time to preach on the work of the Holy Spirit than on Pentecost? Ascension Day is perfect for messages on the Second Coming and/or Missions. As you can see, these days are ones mentioned either in the Gospels or Acts.

    Squire, I'm in complete agreement with you here. Our church is a liturgical one, and we follow the lectionary and observe the traditional days of the church year.

    We have memorial services for deacons, pastors, sweet Aunt Bessie, and so on, but try to have a Good Friday service, celebrating the death of Christ and His atoning sacrifice in some Baptist church and you'll get a tirade, if not worse.
    I completely agree with you Squire. When we preach the great Christian holidays of the Christian calendar, we preachers have to leave our "hobbie horses" and actually preach the texts and the great truths of the Word.
