"I do say that freedom is the Almighty's gift to every person. I also condition it by saying freedom is not America's gift to the world," Bush replied. "It's much greater than that, of course. And I believe we worship the same god," reported the London Telegraph.

Bush's equivalence of the Judeo-Christian and Muslim gods brought reactions of shock and dismay from Christians in the U.S. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination, was quoted in the Baptist Press as saying the president "is simply mistaken."

    Bush on Religion and God

President Says He Believes Muslims and Christians Pray to Same God President talks about America's Election Day concerns in an exclusive interview with ABC News' Charlie Gibson. (ABCNEWS)

In an exclusive interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson, Bush said he believes that both Christians and Muslims worship the same God.

"I think we do. We have different routes of getting to the Almighty," Bush said. "But I want you to understand, I want your listeners to understand, I don't get to get decide who goes to heaven. The Almighty God decides who goes to heaven and I am on my personal walk," he said.

President George W. Bush is once again indicating a belief that all religions are recognized by God. Many born-again Christians have been troubled by Bush's statements and actions that suggest an endorsement of the idea that all religions are equal before God. These believers point to Bush's Ramadan dinners at the White House and his praise of Islam as examples. Associated Press reports that yesterday, in a speech at a New Orleans church, Bush told the crowd that God works through many of the world's religions. "Miracles happen as a result of the love of the Almighty, professed, by the way, taught, by the way, by religions from all walks of life whether it be Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu," Bush said. The president went on to say that there is nothing better than a faith-based program to provide hope: "Again, I don't care what religion it is -- there's nothing more hopeful than the word." It was not clear from the report what "word" President Bush was talking about. [Fred Jackson/AP]

John 14:5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Evidently, a lot of people believe this.

There was a thread about this on Christianforums.com and I got my butt kicked there for daring to say that Muslims and Christians don't worship the same God.

There must be more to the story than that. I believe most of the mods and members on Christianforums.com would agree with that statment.

The government always leads people into apostacy. Just read the accounts of the Kings. Even Solomon lead the people into apostacy. Our government is no different. If you listen or follow them in matters of theology you will end up an apostate every time.

Well, I guess he could have just said they worship a false God. That would have done wonders for international relations.

Because President Bush keeps making similar statements over and over again. Therefore, old news becomes current news.

Besides, if he says it enough, maybe we'll all start believing he is right?

<I hit edit instead of quote button on your post, sorry, Ken - LE>

Or he could say nothing at all. He could say they have an old religion and let it go at that without expounding. So, apparently, since he keeps making similar statements, these things are what he believes. I think it's called universalism. How a person could be born again in the Biblical sense and a universalist simultaneously is quite a puzzle to me.

But I found this link that explains the "born again" part:

Well you could very well be right, LE, but I hope not. There are a lot of Christians who are traditional in practice, but universalist in belief. It's the PC and multicultural way to be. But he most certainly could have handled it better. But he is known for the verbal stumble isn't he?

So are the arguments, but the occaisional thread on this topic continues to pop up occaisionally. Of course, that doesn't make the argument any more or less valid. More or less worn out, perhaps, but more or less valid, no.

Just sounds like more Bush bashing to me since anyone who looks anywhere but to the Bible for spiritual guidance is taking a risk. I don't look to President Bush for spiritual guidance nor to anyone posting on this board.

See?

And, when he speaks these things, he is speaking for you and for me and for the rest of us as a nation and that is what is pretty precarious, IMO.

If he weren't in the highest office in the world it wouldn't matter what he personally believes or what he says about it.

On matters of official governmental policy - yes. On personal opinions about religion such as this thread is about - no. After all, he said, "And I believe we worship the same god." You might notice the word "I" there, LE.

My last post on this thread. You may have the last word if you like.

Do you have any support for that statement?
