Problem backing up CD

I just recently got The Sims. So far, we are having a blast with it. But I have one problem.

I have tried to back up the CD onto another one (CD's live a hard, and short, life at my house). So far, I have wasted two CD-R's because neither one will work. I really don't want to have to buy another copy of The Sims, followed by another, and another...

Any ideas? First try I Selected All and Copied and Pasted to the other disc. Second try I Copied the drive from My Computer and Pasted to the other disc. What am I doing wrong? Is there a better way?

You might try coping all files to a directory on your hard drive and then burn from that spot.

If that doesn't work, the cdrom may have a copyright protect of somesort on it.

I backup most of my cd's and have had a game or two that would not work from the burned copy.

Game companies are getting better at this, If you have Linux anywhere you could probably use an open source burner that does block for block copies, the windows ones all say they do, but there are copy protect features that they include, so sometimes it does not work.

I use the cdrw utility that comes bundled with Solaris 10, on Windows I use Nero open source.

I have had problems like you are describing while using Roxio, or a couple others that come with most burners. Even with cds that are not copy protected. Bottom line is, you should be able to make a copy of a CD, they just are trying to keep you from passing it along.

I'm just trying to make a back-up for my personal use. I try not to use the originals if I can help it...my teenage daughter has no figured out how to open the case and reseat the CD when you take it out. Scratches and data do not mix

I've been using Windows to do the copying. I'll see if I have anything else to do it with.

Do you have an option to "copy disk" rather than dragging and dropping?

If I right-click on my drive in My Computer, I can Copy.

If I Open the drive, I have an option on the left side to Write These Files To CD.

I tried to right-click and Copy...nada.

Haven't tried the other one. Tired of wasting CD-r's.

If you don't have specific CD burning software like usually comes with a burner, such as Roxio or Nero, try downloading CDBurnerXP Pro. It is good, freeware software.

I agree. I always copy the contents of a CD to a folder on the hard drive first.

I finally got it!

I downloaded a free trial of FreeJack 4 off of Download.com.

It took a little while, but it did the trick.
