My daughter told me yesterday that she wanted a promise ring for Christmas. Confused I said, what kind of a promise? She says a promise of purity; never heard of it before but kind of like the idea and was touched by her asking me for it.

What do you think? Any special way to present one? Where do you get them? What kind to get?

I think you have a jewel of a daughter, and you should get a very nice one for her. See tinytim's link.

How precious, Benjamin. Yes, True Love Waits is the answer. My boys don't care much for wearing jewelry, but they keep their True Love Waits rings in a safe place. The commitment card is what they carry on their person.

Whatever happened to taking someone at their word? or keeping a promise? Why has doing things that are Biblical and Spiritual got to be evidenced by the sale of merchandise?

Promise Rings? Come on, all that is is a marketiing ploy for someone to make money. The Bibles says when one makes a vow, one should not be slack in fulfilling that vow. I can't find Scripture to back up someone having to buy another person a ring because he or she made a promise. Plum ridiculous.

Yes, we all know that in OT times, there was never a physical reminder of a vow.

We all know that wedding rings are stupid, unscriptural marketing ploys. Tell your wife you don't need no stinkin' ring...just take you at your word.

    What a ridiculous post.

I have never understood why people have to turn everything into something negative.

Benjamin, I would be proud as a father to have one of my daughters come to me with that request. You have been given some good suggestions above. God bless you and your daughter!

Open your eyes to the truth, guys. Where in the Scripture, OT or NT, where it says to buy someone a reward for their promise to God?

You can say I am being negative if you want, but it's just not there.

True Love Waits was created by a Lifeway... which provides most of the material for SB churches, just to make more money.

    From 1 Samuel 18:

" 3 And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. 4 Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt."

Obviously, these two guys were duped by Satan's servant Lifeway.

See, HBSMN? I can read scripture too!

Benjamin, I'm proud of your daughter...if you can, buy that ring.

A nice ending to this story...if it happens this way...

Several of my students that have gotten married have at the ceremony taken their rings and presented it to their mate. What a great gift.

Yep, you're being negative for no good reason. What can you possibly have against this?

#1, is there something unbiblical about making money? Is there a Scripture that I missed where God said, "Thou shalt not sell any product or provide any service that makes money."?

#2, is it your money that they're going to spend?

A covenant was made, but I do not see a command to go and buy, or demand merchandise because of that covenant. I do not see where Jonathan said 'Now David, I have made this pledge to you, so therefore I must give you my royal garments.

Where does it say go buy merchandise because of a covenant? The answer is nowhere.

And where does it say not to?

Do not be discouraged, Benjamin. Kudos to your daughter -- she is quite the young lady.

So, if what one person does in the Bible is to be what everyone else does, I guess since Peter denied Jesus, since Judas betrayed Jesus, since Paul persecuted Christians, we should do so also. Thanks for enlightening me to that.

I think you are overreacting. Re: another post: I don't see that B. HAS to do this or that his daughter is making any demand.

I think it is a great idea. Remember the stones in the Jordan River? Sometimes some of us find a tangible reminder useful. (As I look at my wedding ring.) But, no, in an ultimate sense, I don't NEED a wedding ring to fulfill my vows.
Sounds like you have issues with the economic system in which we operate. I don't in this case. No one is forced by Lifeway to buy anything.

I see you're not going to answer my question of why this bothers you so. Have a great day! :wavey:

We've done something with my daughters that our friend, another pastor did with his daughters. We found it so beautiful and meaningful that we just had to copy.

When the girls turned 13, we took them out to a fancy dinner. I had taken them to a key store and they got to choose a key that would represent their hearts - my oldest chose an old brass skeleton key with a heart at the end and the other chose a skeleton key that was a clover at the end. They gave the key to their father at the dinner - telling him to guard the key to their heart until it was time to give it to their husband. In exchange, they each got a beautiful piece of jewelry - my oldest got a cross made of diamonds and my younger one received a locket with a picture of her and Dad in it. At their wedding, my husband will explain what we've done and will then present the key to his daughter's heart to her husband with a charge to guard her heart as much as he did while she grew up.

I have to say that it gave me chills when I saw this at our friend's first daughter's wedding and it made me cry for the next 2. We're still waiting for #4 to get married - LOL!! I say "we're still waiting" because their receptions are all at my house.

I see nothing wrong with giving these girls something tangable to remember their vow to God, their parents, themselves AND their spouse. Heck, I remember GOD giving a pretty drastic sign of a covenant between Himself and a certain people. Atleast we're not asking our daughters (or having them ask us) to cut off a piece of themselves!

    Benjamin,

This is a special time for you and your daughter. When my daughter was 16 I took her out to lunch and spent the day with her. It was just for her. After lunch we went to a jewelry store and she selected an Alexandrite stone and a ring setting. When her ring was ready I took her out to dinner for just us two and I gave her the ring and talk with her about this gift was not only for her but for her future husband. We talked about her commitment not only to me, herself, her future husband but also to God. On her wedding night she will give this ring to her husband and tell him what it is all about and how she has committed to be faithful to him long before she ever knew him.

It was a great time for both of us. It cemented all the things we (my wife and I) taught her as she was growing and also gives her a visable reminder of a covenant she made with the Lord. I would not have missed this time with her for the world. Don't let those who are negative about everything discourage you from this time with your precious daughter.

    Bro Tony
