Prophets and prophecying

    There are new testament scriptures which speak of prophecying(spelled wrong?)after Jesus but also that their will be no more prophets after Jesus.Could prophecying(when found in new testament)simply mean someone who reads the already written scriptures and knows what they mean?

    LUKE 16 [16] The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.[17] And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.[18] Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.

    The law and the prophets were until John

    HEBREWS 1 [1] God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,[2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

    spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,in these last days spoken unto us by his Son

    MARK 12 [1] And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.[2] And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.[3] And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.[4] And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.[5] And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some.[6] Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.[7] But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.[8] And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.[9] What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.[10] And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:

    he sent him also LAST unto them

    Seems very clear about Jesus being the LAST of the prophets. Sooo...what about prophecying?

    Jesus tells the Jews in Matt 23 that HE WOULD (in the future) send them prophets (plural) and that they would persecute and kill them.

    John the baptizer is not John the revelator. John the baptizer died before Christ. John the revelator - was a prophet and spoke by divine inspiration - even seeing into the future.

    Paul in 1Thess 4 also sees the future and in 2Cor 11 is taken in vision to heaven.

    Arguing that John the baptizer was the last prophet of the NT - does not hold up to scripture.

    Christ did not say that.

    You missed quoted the Scripture. Mt.23:34 does not say that God will in the future send Prophets. John the Baptist is the last Old Testament prophet. John the revelator is the last New Testament prophet. Revelation is the last book of the Bible. It takes us right into eternity. Anyone who adds to the prophecy of this book, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book.

    #1. Revelation is not the last book written in the NT. Nor is John delcaring an "end" to the gift of prophecy.

    #2. The NT prophets already listed in 1Cor 14 and in acts did not write a single word of the NT - yet they "existed". Arguing that the "existence of a prophet" is adding to the book of Revelation OR to the NT - is already shown to fail even by NT standards at the time the book WAS being written.

    #3. The message of Christ in Matt 23 DID predict "MORE prophets" and here it is..


    Christ did not limit his statement to "just that year" it included the future.

    And as Paul states in 1Cor 14 - our role is to accept the prophets and even more "desire EARNESTLY spiritual gifts - especially that you may prophesy".

    He does not say "desire earnestly spiritual gifts EXCEPT for prophecy since John is the last one and he already exists".
