Compare and contrast the new immigration policies proposed by prime minister David Cameron (conservative) with president Barack Obama.
Cameron is proposing:
1. A cap on the number of new immigrants allowed in the UK.
2. Ending the practice of paying unemployment benefits to immigrants. Under current policy an immigrant can come to the UK and immediately apply for unemployment benefits. The amount of this benefit is currently about £600 a month (about $940) This practice in the EU is called "benefit tourism" and is done mostly by younger people as they travel around milking benefits while claiming to be looking for work.
3. If new immigrants don't find a job within 6 months they will be deported.
4. No government "in-work" benefits (child benefits, tax credits, housing benefits, access to socialized housing) until the immigrant has been working in the UK for at least 4 years.
5. Even after the immigrant has been working in the UK for at least 4 years, the child benefit will not be allowed to be sent home to the worker's family in his/her original country.
6. Require landlords to check the immigration status of renters.
7. Require partners of immigrant workers that want to enter the country prove they can speak some English and also have job skills. Idea is to crack down on sham marriages.
8. If the European Union does not agree to the change in British policy, Cameron is proposing that the UK leave the EU.
