Why 'uh, oh'?

 

There has been a couple groups trying to do this for third world countries so everyone can have net access. One has a ppc unit that is being developed.

There is talk that it will be for third world countries only, and not offered here.

Neat idea if they can do it. Most handhelds can be built for a lot lower cost, they just retail them for 1000 because corporations will pay it.

The bigger units are similar to the mobilepro 880 or the jornada 820 series from the pictures and descriptions I've seen. Some have a hard drive.

 

It ain't gonna be a great computer, if they actually pull it off.

Think hand-crank on the side for power, molasses slow, that sort of thing...

Not what I'd buy, anyway.

It's priceless for poor children on poor countries..

 

Just what we need is more people being infected by the trivial inanity that is teh internet. Very little of any good comes from it. Please don't subject these poor kids to the internet.

 

In poverty striken nations if they can't afford clothing, shoes or food - where will they get $130 for a computer or the elecricity to recharge the battery?

 

Yet another good point there ...

Are we really so foolish as to believe that the greatest need of people in poverty is internet access?

Probably not their targeted clientele.

I think some of the groups desire to give their product away or sell if the people can afford. It isn't a get rich scheme. Personally, if they get them that cheap they can sell them in America at a profit and give them away elsewhere.

This was on the national news, and the will be free to the poor.

 

Gee, now all we have to do is come up with the billions of dollars to run cable or fiber optics to the remote corners of the world.

Shoot, that ain't even got to the remote corners of my county, much less the backwaters of the globe...

I believe this is a grand idea!

No, it's *not* top of the line systems. Yes, it will be slow, Yes, they will have to crank it to get it to run, and they may not even be connected to the internet, but think of the possibilities!

They can type letters, they can learn Math, and Science, and English(or whatever language), they can learn!

Learning makes ANYONE better, no matter how simple the gadget was that got them to learn.


We should embrace this idea, not knock it. It's VERY EASY for us to knock the idea since we sit in American, with computer power and beyond, and are connected to everything in the world it seems..

But what about 20 years ago, when we didn't have what we have today? How we started with 8086's and 8088, and then 286, 386, 486, 586, Pentium's... We have grown, now it's their turn...

Embrace the idea!
