Prozak for Lovers

    Has anybody heard Prozak for Lovers? I found them by accident on CDBaby.com

    They do classic rock songs in a bossa nova/samba style.

    At first I thought it was a joke (and it may be. Maybe I'm just the only guy who doesn't get it) but it turned out to be a great album.

    Easily as good as most things Astrid Gilberto or Sergio Mendes (or, at least, the Swingle Singers) ever did.

    Tonight's the Night is one of the darkest, downright spooky records I have ever heard. A glimpse right into his heart.

    Remember, next time you listen to this record, it was recorded right after Bruce Berry, Neil's roadie, and Danny Whitten, Crazy Horse's original guitarist, were found dead of heroin overdoses.

    Neil actually refused to have the album released, at first, and held onto the tapes for a few years.

    It's a funny album in that it ranges from country rock that follows the Stones "Some Girls" formula to very, very dark confessions of a life gone out of control. I kind of wonder if Gram Parsons had lived, would he have made this kind of album, trying to reconcile his faith in Christ with his drug addictions.

    If you want to hear the cry of somebody who desperately needs Christ, take a listen to the track "World on a String".

    The good news is that, today, Neil seems to be one of the most level headed and together artists in the circles that he runs with.

    Gram Parson could definitely do good gospel singing. Sometimes I listen to "Farther Along" when he was with the Flying Burrito Bros.
    I have wondered also if Gram would have incorporated more gospel in his albums had he had lived or if he would have turned his life around.

    Gram was always very upfront about his faith and always included Gospel songs in his live shows.

    One of the most famous pictures we have of him is of him in one of his favorite stage jackets with a giant cross surrounded by "John 3:16" "Jesus Died For You" (it can be seen on the cover and album photos from "Gilded Palace of Sin").

    It's also pretty well known that he was nearly obsessed with the Louvin Brothers' Gospel sides, especially their album, "Satan is Real" and wanted to pay homage to that album (with the twelve foot cardboard devil on the cover?)

    I don't know what he would have done, but I know it would have been good.
