If the shoe fits. . .

Why do you use a pseudonym?

    What does your pseudonym mean?

It seems to me that pseudonyms add a "make-believe" element to our e-world. Is it some sort of alter-ego or what?

    Tim (my actual real-life name)

If I used the initials of my name I would be ALA {Abby Louise Allison} and when a friend at church found out, he teased me with out mercy about secretly being Muslim! On the BB, I go by name. That's why it's part of my display name so no one will have any question as to who I am.

I chose my name because God has blessed me with 16 beautiful grandchildren. I always sign my real name at the bottom of my posts.

    Blessings,

My dad chose my name - before I was born - maybe even before my parents were married - Dad told Mom that their first born son had to be named Daniel.

My great great grandfather - Daniel Todd came to America (1847) from Scotland via Ireland. My grandfather was Daniel Todd - I am Daniel Todd - I now have a grandson - Daniel Todd. I guess we like to have a Daniel Todd (all different middle names) every other generation.

No pseudonym here - besides I guess I misread the whole thing when I registered - because my pseudonym is Revpa. It seems that when our twin daughters met young men at Bible College - they wanted to know what to call Jan and myself. Jan said they could call her Jan - now they call her Mom - I told them Reverand Pa (Revpa) and that they should come to attention when they talked to me.
    [IMG] :D [IMG] [IMG] ;)

PS: Sue you have eleven more grandchildren than we do - but ain't they grand - best thing since sliced bread - spoil them - send them home - then brag them up. [IMG]

Well, I think mine would be pretty obvious, He (Jesus) died for you, but also for me, and the whole world. It was also an e-mail addy I used a number of years ago when I was on web-tv. Someday I hope it become available again so I can grab it.

However, like Sue, I always sign my name at the bottom.

    God Bless!!!

I use a pseudonyms depending on the board and the style of it. Often the name I pick has some sort of biblical meaning the person has to look up to get, or is related to something I'm trying to do on the board.
Yeah, it's like an alter ego sometimes, and I love it! It's fun. I've got anything from girls being suggestive to men threatening to beat me up, so it's also kinda funny. When someone posts with a name that isn't gender specific most people assume you're a guy without even asking. I quickly found out being a guy would NOT be fun or easy, between girls hounding you and men wanting to fight you over things like just disagreeing on the interpretation of a scripture. If we girls got into physical fights over stuff like that we'd have demolished the female race by now!

Well, I think my name explains itself. Atleast everyone got it when I first switched to this name.

Hmmm...I bet nobody can guess my real name. :D

BTW, since Dan metioned where his name came from, I feel obliged to do the same.

My great-great grandfather was James Robert Reed I, born 1845. His first son was James Robert Reed II, born 1865. Now, James the 1st, had a son from a later marriage named George Walter Reed, my great grandfather, born 1885. He had a son named James Robert Reed III, born 1925(we called him Uncle Bill, why  ) Anyway, Helem Edward Reed, my grandfather, born 1919, was also a son of George. Skip a generation and you've got me, James Robert Reed IV.

*The numbers after the names were added by me in order to prevent confusion...at least, somewhat. [IMG]

Hmm. Guess this is just me. LOL
Dr. Bob asked once if it was my real name. Made me wonder if Bob is his! The girls dad was calling himself Bob when I met him, I changed his name to Brandon. For real. [IMG] Nobody's real name is Bob, it's always Robert, so why isn't the nick for it Rob? It doesn't make sense, and I just could't go with it.

Artimaeus (I pronounce it Ar-ti-may'-us) was supposed to have been Bartimaeus (like blind Bartimaeus) since I am visually impaired. A little slip of the fingers and "ta-dah!". I use a pseudonym on the internet all the time because I don't trust spammers who lurk on bulletin boeards to gleam E-ddresses and names and such. My real name is Joe (not Joseph), I am from Kentucky, and the opinions expressed on this board are necessarily mine (nobody else wants them). :D

Nearly three years ago, when the BB was in its infancy, I was asked by SuperDave to join. He thought some questions needed an intelligent response, but that I would do.

I had NEVER been on a "board" (only had 10 hours a month 'net access time). But when it asked for a "name", I was tooo stoooopid to know you didn't dare reveal your real name, email, address, et al.

So I called myself Dr. Bob, which is what all my college students called me. A little informal and a little respectful. And gave the truth.

When I joined the "other" board (Fundamentalist Forum) I decided to go with "Didaskalos" and NOT reveal who I really was. (means "teacher" in Greek). But within six months shifted to Dr. Bob.

If you're not proud of who you are and not willing to 'take the heat', then I can't see posting at all. (My wife, on the other hand, would NEVER use her real name; this is an ugly world).

Haruo isn't exactly a pseudonym. It's the name I use in Esperanto and Japanese. It's the name I used 35 years ago when I was a 6th grader in Japanese public schools. (I was given it the previous year by my teacher at the Japanese Community Center here is Seattle.) It means "Spring[time] Man", and alludes to the fact that I turned 49 on Saturday. My brother Graham, who was born in October, is "Akio" ("Autumn Husband"), and Alan, born in June, is "Saburō" ("Number 3 Prince"). My sister Peggy is "Sumiko" ("India Ink Child"). My English given name (Leland) doesn't do well in Japanese or Esperanto, and since those are two of my main languages it's important for me to have a handle that flows in them. (Much as Saul found it helpful to have a Greek name that people wouldn't make fun of, hence the famous Paul. The reference is to Akenson's Saint Saul, which I recommend.)

I am Haruo here and at the Mudcat Café and ThinkingBaptists.com, still Leland at BaptistLife.com. Other handles elsewhere. For example, in Latin I go by "Lelandicus Bryans Rox" (gen. Lelandici Bryantis Rossis), and in Gaelic by "Líolaind Ròs".

As for my family name, in romanized Japanese and Esperanto I use "Ros'" (the apostrophe stands for a 'u' in Japanese and an 'o' in Esperanto), but in normal Japanese I use kanji (click here; it's the large green characters on my baby picture) not katakana (because "rosu" in katakana is Japanese for "LA" as in "Los Angeles", and I don't have anything to do with Los Angeles if I can help it; I certainly don't want people thinking of me as "LA Haruo".

    But I digress.

I was taught that you didn't reveal your real name on the internet. I still think is is wise not to.

This is the first board I've been on so there was a learning curve; I choose the name with only a little thought. I choose "Deacon" because that is that is my gift in life (a helper or servant) and it is what I am in church. I'm a little embarrased at times because some may see the name as an esteemed title rather than a lowly position. We were all called to serve.

    Why a pseudonym?

    Tradition?

    Simon became Peter.
    Saul became Paul.
    Jacob became Israel.
    Abram became Abraham.

Abiyah, pronounced "ah - vee - YAH," is my real
name. It means that our "God is my Father." I
love my name -- very meaningful to me in many

Hmm. stubbornkelly. I bet no one can guess why I have that name, huh? ;)

Actually, a friend and I keep talking about starting a company called Stubborn Women, and we set up e-mail addies to go along with that. And so, when it came time to choose a nic, stubbornkelly is what I went with. I'm somewhat stubborn, although "adamant" is probably a nicer way to say it [IMG] , and my given name is Kelly.

I used to go by my middle name, but it's so rare I got a little paranoid about it. It's a bastardization of "Eliezar," but I've only ever seen it spelled the way I do in my family.

Like some of the others here, I am also dubious about posting my real name on the web. I don't mistrust anyone on this board, but there are others who come here besides the members. I chose the name Wondering0ne for two reasons. The first, is that I am very curious by nature, and the second is that if I admit from the get-go that I wonder about things, people will not mistake me for a know-it-all, LOL. I had not thought much about this, but I will also start signing my posts with my real name.

    Looking Up,
    Carol

Everywhere else on the 'net I have used the nick "kreysay" (long story there).

Titus 2:1 is one verse from a group that has been a bit of a war cry of mine for the last year or so. I figured I may as well use it as nick here when I signed up.

Being a night shift taxi driver I know there are a lot of kooks on the planet, so use a nick and/or my first name so I don't get all them kooks at my door. The funny side to this is that I am always telling people when I drive the cab, what rank I hang around on, etc etc [IMG] Oh well [IMG]

    Yours semi-anonymously ;)

I am Thankful, but my name is Betty and I have used it as my display name and I may again.

I am thankful for our God, our Savior Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, my husband, our children, our grandchildren, our combined families, our Country, our Freedom. There is just no end to the things I am thankful for. [IMG] [IMG]
