Punxutawney Phil didn't see his shadow...

There was a large crowd gathered near the abode of the groundhog Punxutawney Phil this AM, long before sunrise, as shown on the Weather Channel. When the time came, the man removed Phil from his shelter, and, LO! He didn't leave a shadow that could be seen ! Thus, an early Spring is indicated.

If Phil could think & talk, he'd likely say, "Why didn't all those punx stay home & lemme sleep? I don't bother them; why do they bother me ?"

This rite has been going on since 1887, in various forms.

The groundhog, also known as the woodchuck or whistle pig, is a large rodent, which can be a garden pest. They can be killed by large dogs. In captivity, they can live 12-14 years. While mostly herbivorous, they will eat insects & small animals they may encounter.

The legend started when, in days of old, German people saw some male hedgehogs emerge from hibernation on early February sunny days, to loog for a mate, only to soon retreat to their burrows til March. they began believing this signified 6 more weex of winter.(Actually, there was little for the GHs to eat; thus they went back to sleep.) When some of these Germans migrated to Pennsylvania, they shifted their allegiance to the groundhog, which was plentiful there, unlike hedgehogs.

'Nuffin wrong with people having a little fun ! Phil lives in "Groundhog Heaven" & is likely sound asleep again at the time of this writing !

There’s an all night party in preparation for the event.

One of my daughters went to school in Puxy for a year before transferring the the main campus of IUP.
Other than this event the town is not much.

My dachshund used to toss groundhogs and chase them down their holes.
They’re fair tree climbers given the right motivation. :Laugh

After the dog passed I’ve resorted to trapping and relocating them.182FF667-E83D-4846-9118-0CAE88B74ABD.jpeg

Oh, and that Bill Murray movie, Groundhog Day, wasn’t filmed in the town.

When we lived in northern Maine our dog was gaining on a groundhog when the critter squirreled its way up the neighbor's small maple tree - very much motivated. But in vain, as our neighbor's garden protection program included his 6-mm deer rifle.

Couple years back we had a 'hog family digging around our foundation. I was all set to use my .22 rimfire (and hide the meat in the freezer to be eaten while my wife was away - she wouldn't have touched it.) Our live traps didn't fool the adults but caught a half-grown pup/cub which I relocated 3/4 mile away.

Bait a live trap with a strawberry, they can’t resist!
Once caught two in an hour.

The young ones are easy, another time I caught one without even baiting the trap.

Sunny and warm here today, looks like ole Phil might be wrong.

Considering I Timothy 4 and insistence on having nothing to do with folklore and fables, why should this be discussed here?
