What is the purpose of th local church?
Evangelism? Edification of the believer? Glorification of God?

Eph 4 pictures training as important so that the people can do the work of the Lord - many see that as edification but others might see edification as building the spiritual life/living etc.

You think the Great Commission could have anything to do with it?

IMHO, The local church is to be the local assembly of the Body of Christ to: Exalt the Savior, Equipt the Saints, and Evangelize the sinner.

The local church has many purposes. The first and foremost is to worship the Living God. Everything must flow from worshipping in Spirit and Truth. If you haven't got that right, nothing else will be right.

What other kind of assembly is there?

How can an assembly be anything but "local"?

The universal visible/invisible assembly has never: preached a sermon, baptized a convert, taught a doctrine, disciplined a member, nor held a business meeting.

    Selah,

A Biblical local church is an assembly of baptized (immersed) believers who have voluntarily associated themselves together for the purpose of carrying out the Great Commission and observing the two ordinances of Christ (the Lord's Supper and Baptism).

The church is in existance to bring the body together. Mankind is made up of diverse talents. We gather together as the body under the headship of Christ. Therefore accomplishing His will on earth. It's most important function is to reach the lost. In church we gather srength and cohesivness. We keep out rogue cells. We are in one accord or at least should be. When people don't go to church they are ineffective as God has set up the local church to direct and feed the saints'.

It would seem that reflecting on the Scriptures highlighted in Piper's/Edwards' "God's Passion for His Glory"/"The End for Which God Created the World" would help bring things into focus. It's all about God's glory.
