Question About Licensing To Preach...

Ordination, or License to Preach?

 

Either case, it should stand unless you moved to another state. Of course, the pastor of your new congregation may have a say in that, since you would now be representing that particular church.

Typically, from what I understand, most churches of like faith will honor a license from another church. But that would be up to the local church body to affirm that license or not.

 

A license is just a congregation's show that they as a non-profit orginization recognize your calling to the gospel ministry. Once a license is issued you should never need a new one as it only takes one recognition to "legalize" you.

Most states however as far as marriages go require an ordinatin which is a formal recognition of official peers. In many cases licensure is your home Church helping you step off on your on by giving you a foot in the door to preach at Churches.

So no you will never need a second ordination or license ever unless you change denominations and your congregation, simply out of their wanting you to be ordained in their faith, requires it. Even then that is just for the congregation not the state.

 

I have never in my lifetime had a license to preach. In my group, a pastor is called by a local church and our organization's secretary registers that name with the government and a certificate to perform weddings is issued by the provincial government.

An ordination is done by the local church, with organizational representation present, and other pastors...After the service, the secretary issues a document of ordination...once in a lifetime.

So, a license is foreign to me, and is not a requirement in Canada.

Does your government financially compensate any ministers?

 

Only Quebec pays ministers for the registration of baptisms, weddings and funerals...You fill out a monthly report.

There is no compensation in any other province.

Some states, like AZ, recognize a license as a minister of the Gospel to be allowed to perform marriages and funerals. Check with your local courthouse. MI says you have the same rights and privileges there, as a minister, as you would in your state of residence.. IE if you are allowed to marry and bury where you live, you can do it there.

 

I'm confussed. Can anyone show me from the Bible where someone called of God has to have a license to preach? I must have missed that chapter.

 

It is not a Biblical mandate to license a man to ministry. It is much like the letters of introduction Paul recieved and sent. It comes from your local church saying that they have witnessed you expressing and displaying a gift, and call from God to the ministry.

 

To tell the truth, the Bible says that when the Church recognizes a man being called to ministry, they would lay hands upon him and say prayer. It never really mentions receiving a certificate or going before an ordination council in any way. Ordinaiton is not really in the Bible but is a practice that was picked up from the Catholic Church in the dark ages. Today it is kept because the governments across the world recognize licensed or ordained ministers as officers of the court able to perform marriages. I do believe though that ordination and licensure are God's will for the structure of the Church.

 

I don't think you're really confused. I think you're just trying to make a point. And you're inferring in your point that you've read the whole bible, and perhaps others don't know what they're talking about.
