Raleigh, NC is reported as being endangered by a toxic waste cloud.

Pray for those affected . . . If you want tell your stories about how much safer one is in the toxic zone than sitting on your porch drinking a mint julip . . . ;) Do so after you lift up a prayer to God Almighty. Pray for rain . . . pray that God will reduce the severity of the gases . . .

Chlorine is nasty stuff. But it does dissolve nicely in water, and will be gone with no residue if that's all it was.

I got a lungful of it in a lab accident about 40 years ago. For about four hours, I was miserable. And then it went away. Didn't seem to leave any permanent damage. I played soccer back then, and could still run for two 45 min halves.

A large dose of it for a healthy person, or a smaller dose for a person with heart or lung problems could be fatal.

LD50 (level at which one-half of exposed organisms are killed) is about 800-1000 parts per million in mammals. The OSHA PEL for Chlorine is 1.0 ppm, compared to 0.1 ppm for Ozone.

As usual, children and the elderly are most at risk.

LD50 . . . half are killed? Or, half are expected to die?

    ;)

Half are killed. You see, even with horrendously lethal doses, a few lucky ones somehow survive. A more accurate measure of lethality is the dose at which half of them die.

Hence, "LD50" the dose at which half of the test animals die. "Lethal Dose, 50%"

Even though it has beeeeeeen a long time

LD50 means the exposure where 50% are expected to die, based upon experiments . . . the tests were usually not on lab rats . . .

    ;)

PS at that dosage . . . there are no lucky ones . . .

That's what I said. And yes, it is generally tested on rats.

And yes, there are indeed doses at which 99% or higher die, but a few lucky ones survive.
