ATLANTA (AP) — Arizona's Randy Johnson became the oldest pitcher in major league history to throw a perfect game, retiring all 27 hitters to lead the Diamondbacks over the Atlanta Braves 2-0 Tuesday night.

The 40-year-old left-hander struck out 13 and went to three balls on just one hitter -- Johnny Estrada in the second inning. Estrada fouled off three straight 3-2 pitches before going down swinging.

Had a revealing interview with Mr. Johnson on Sports Spectrum this morning. I liked what he had to say about being a Christian but we have to be warriors too.

That's a pretty old picture... if you look at the photos from the perfect game, his hair is close-cropped...

The previous oldest perfect game pitcher in the modern era was Cy Young at 37YO!

Might not want him to marry my daughter, but sure wish he was playing for the Rockies!

This was really cool, I have always liked Randy Johnson. Too bad he doesn't play for Baltimore.

Saw Randy Johnson in a TV commercial last night. Can't remember what product; but he was
all "slicked up" and spoke very articulately. [IMG] [IMG]

Tossing a perfecto is like making a hole-in-one or bowling a 300-skill and luck coming together on a given day.

Given RJ's accomplishments over the years, this game's just icing on his great big cake!

Look at all the pitchers who've tossed perfectos or no-hitters w/ all the other accomplishments as the Big Unit has. The one who comes immediately to mind is Tom Phoebus. He began his career pitching shutouts in his 1st 2 MLB starts and threw a no-hitter 2 years later. However, he lasted just 7 seasons, with a 56-52 career record.(I met Phoebus when he was in the twilight of his career, so his name jumps out!)

Some other lesser baseball lights who threw NHers are:
    Dock Ellis(Pirates)
    Clyde Wright(Angels)
    Lenny Barker(Indians)(perfecto)

While Nolan Ryan threw SEVEN NHers w/o a perfecto!

IMO, RJ is the best LHP since Carlton at Philly. However, it's hard to rate any LHP above Spahn.

Anyway, WAYTAGO, BIG UNIT! You deserve it!

My nickname for him is "uglypuss." But I love him anyway. I do think he looks better with the haircut, though.

Part of being a successful MLB pitcher is appearance. Standing 6'10" & appearing to be throwing the ball from 1st base is intimidating enough, but trying to present as ugly a face as possible adds to it, I think..

Years ago, a fireballing pitcher named Ryne Duren wore glasses with pop bottle bottoms for lenses, & while warming up, would often uncork a few wild pitches with his fastball purposely, to give opposing batters something to think about. Then came Dick Radatz, a big man, who scowled from the mound so fiercely that his OWN CATCHER was leery of him!

The scarier a pitcher can appear, the more the batters have to think about, I.E."Hey, is dis dude gonna behead me with the next pitch? Is he under psychiatric care?" Whether this is part of RJ's bag of tricks, I don't know, but it certainly doesn't HURT him!

He almost did. When he was a free agent, Ed Wade was going to go after him but he declined. We got Millwood, instead, who's great when he's good but when he's bad, he's brutal.

Saw the Randy Johnson commercial again. It was for Capital One credit card. Would like to know more about Randy; think I'll do some research. BTW, the woman in the ad by the swimming pool seems to think Randy looked OK. [IMG] Wonder if he's married? :D
