Generally one of three things happen when the Lord doesn't show up at the predicted time.

1) the predictor is discredited and we never hear from him/her anymore.
2) the predictor says OOPS and claims a mistake was made in the calculations - another date is forthcoming sometimes beyond the expected life of the predictor.
3) IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED!! - the world as we know it will never be the same- oh, but only a selected few (with eyes to see and ears to hear) were aware of it.

I tend to think that the actual experience of the Second Coming will be just as far from our present expectations, if not much more so, than Christ's First Coming was from first-century Jewish Messianic expectations. Yes, the promises will be kept (bearing in mind that promises of judgment are always conditional...Jeremiah 18:7-8) and all of the bases will be touched...but the play-by-play might look like nothing anybody presently expects.
