This is pure foolishness it looks like. Unfortunately, there are apparently some who are trying to attach some biblical idea to it.

 

They also reported the end of the world scenario of Jan 1 2000, as well as documented the "Elvis is Alive" theory.

 

Well, we will be waiting for you after the date that has been set is past and all Christians are still here.

Near as I can tell, not one of those is a story from the New York Press or Reuters.

Sounds like that guy "Michael" is proliferating your message board, Jeff.

I'll do a search for the observatory and the April 4, 2001 date to see if there's actually a story out there.

In the meantime--*real* scientists have continued to theorize about a tenth planet, but have yet to find it. Amazing, really, considering that they're using the Hubble to see galaxies so much farther away....

Nope, sorry, did a search for Reuters and for Lowell Observatory; nothing for the dates mentioned came up. Perhaps providing a link to the actual news stories instead of the flights of fancy?

Hit-and-run, Jefferson?

 

Jefferson has been hitting-and-running multiple message boards with this same post, sometimes even multiple times at the same site but in different forums. It think it's fair to call him a spammer.

However, to add some perspective (and hopefully some more credible information) to this claim:

The "Planet X" rumours are simply the latest bunch of pseudo-astronomical, doomsday-prophesying, New Age codswallop to make the rounds. We didn't all die back in 1980 when the planets aligned. Shoemaker-Levy hit Jupiter but didn't do us all in. Neither did Hale-Bopp, although thirty-odd ufologists in San Diego believed it was a spaceship coming to pick them up and did themselves in. And the Y2K scare completely failed to end civilization as we know it.

But nature abhors a vacuum, and now here comes "Planet X" to send the gullible into a tizzy, heading for the hills with a box of ammo and a year's supply of MREs and canned goods.

You should be aware that the current "Planet X" scare originated from one Nancy Lieder, whose web page (http://www.zetatalk.com/) Jefferson cited above. Lieder is a saucer nut who claims she is getting her info about "Planet X" (which is really a brown dwarf star, not a planet) from the "Zetans," aliens from near Zeta Reticuli. This story has been more popularly spread by a Mark Hazlewood, who has appeared on Art Bell, whose late-night phone-in show is a veritable fount of New Age flummery, pseudoscience, and other assorted nonsense.

So the whole thing is based on voices in some wacko's head, an abysmal misunderstanding of science and the misinterpretation of some old news stories. For example, when Jefferson wrote:

he is referring to a news story in which it is said that NASA was speculating that there might be a tenth "Planet X" out there based on some observed irregularities in the orbits of the outer planets. However, when Voyager 2 went past Neptune several years later, its data indicated that the then-current estimate of Neptune's mass was off by about .5% - a discrepancy that, once corrected, eliminated the "need" for a Planet X.

If there were an inbound, planet-sized object close enough to Earth that it was only a year away from crossing our orbit, then every amateur astronomer with a half-decent telescope would be able to see it. But it isn't there.

Unfortunately, "Christian" broadcasters and "news" sources are starting to pick up on this as well, so we can expect the usual amount of fear, panic, and false prophecy for the next year.

A good secular source that debunks this story can be found at Planet X and the Pole Shift. The author also takes on a few of the other recent scares, such as "chemtrails" and HAARP.

The key words here are "useful" and "relevant." Sites about massive inbound, ocean-covered brown dwarf stars that no one can see are not useful, and "information" from bug-eyed monsters from Zeta Reticuli, channeled through strange women, are not relevant.
