Re-baptising Christians

If they know the Lord in a personal relationship and were scripturally baptized (immersion) following their relationship with the Lord then I see no grounds Scripturally to rebaptize them.

I would agree too.

I heard a coworker -- not too long ago -- mention that she'd been baptised four times and each time it was for a different reason. I know my mouth hit the floor. We were in a meeting, so I didn't get to question her at the time about what in the world she was talking about. AND I had a difficult time catching up to her again about it. But to say that it's bothered me . . . that would be an understatement.

I've been baptized 3 times:

1) One year after I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour

2) At a Pentecostal church. (I thought I needed my sins washed away again) :laugh:

3) At a Baptist church. (I was becoming a member and I didn't want the congregation to have to wonder if I had ever been baptized)

A believer joining our church must be baptized:

1) if he/she has never been immersed by a Scriptural NT church.
2) if he/she is not sure as to whether the church that immersed them was a NT assembly.

The authority to baptize was given to the Lord's churches. If one was Scripturally saved, but immersed in a church that is not a NT assembly...then they were not baptized under the authority of one of the Lord's candlestick churches, and thus need to be baptized (not re-baptized). I know thats close-minded, narrow-minded, intolerent, in the minds of many....but Bible: Matt. 28:19,20; Acts 2:41-47; et. al.

 

My conviction as a missionary and pastor is that baptism is to be by immersion, performed under the authority of a New Testament church, is only for professing Christians, and that those being baptised must have a clear understanding of the meaning and purpose of baptism.

I have dealt with too many Christians who were baptized but have no idea why. Or they were baptized by their uncle (who was/is not a pastor) in the pool in the backyard one Saturday afternoon. Or they claim that baptism washed their sins away.

My conviction is that those folks need to be taught what is Biblical Baptism and they need to be baptised again, in a Scriptural manner, under the authority of a New Testament church.

Otherwise why call ourselves 'Baptist' if we will just accept any old 'dunking'.

 

I was baptized at the age of 8 in our family church. (church of christ) As I grew in maturity and gained knowledge, I felt as though I was baptized out of everyone else doing it in my family ....obviously not for the right reasons. Also, my beliefs changed. I left the church of christ church at the age of 18 and had a believer's baptism at the age of 33. The 2nd time around I feel as though I was being baptized as an act of obediance to God and due to Christ's example. Was there a need for the 2nd baptism? I don't know. In my heart...a huge YES would resound! did God need it? I'll ask him when I get to heaven...... :laugh:

What did Matthew mean in this verse? MT 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

I heard a preacher say the fire purifies you. What are your thoughts?

 

I will have to confess that I was surprised that the majority of those who answered the poll would accept the baptism from any denomination that held to a biblical view of baptism. Maybe we ought to do a couple of things here.

One, define scriptural baptism.

Two, define what constitutes a New Testament Church.

And as a result of one and two,

Three, which denominations or groups do not practice scriptural baptism, and you would require an individual from those denominations to be (re)baptized, if they asked for membership in your church?

Further, let's complicate matters. You believe you were saved before you were baptized, but the baptizing church holds that its baptism is regenerative and sacramental. Can a baptism based on false doctrine be valid?

So let's get at it. Which denoms teach false doctrine which you believe would invalidate their baptism?
