Recommended Biographies

I highly recommend biographies of the following heros of the faith:

George Mueller - one of the greatest books on faith that I've ever read in my life. A.T. Pierson wrote a book about him. There are several other good biographies about Mueller.
Billy Sunday
David Livingston
D.L. Moody
William Carey
Charles Spurgeon
Jonathan Edwards
John/Charles Wesley

We may not agree with these men on all issues but no one can dismiss God's Providential hand on their lives and their love and service for the Lord and His work.

I highly recommend Bounds & Murray for books on prayer.

 

I would recommend the following:

George Muller by Roger Steer

Charles Spurgeon: The Great Orator by J.C. Carlile

Robert Murray McCheyne by A.A. Bonar

Only One Life: The Biography of Stephen F. Olford by John Phillips

 

Any bigoraphy by Iain Murray or Dallimore. That would include the biographies of Spurgeon, Whitefield, the excellent two volume bio of Martyn Lloyd Jones, and Jonathan Edwards. I second the recommendation of the "Memoirs and Remains of Robert Murray McCheyne" by Bonar.

Start with Lloyd Jones. I try to read these two books at least once a year.

 

McCullough's John Adams was wonderful, as was 1776. I look forward to reading Ketcham's bio of James Madison and James Grant's recent John Adams: Party of One. I must confess, though, I'm not much of a biography reader.
