Recommended Chrisitan Books

My absolute favorite Christian book is the Bible.

I also like "And the Word Came with Power: How God Met and Changed a People Forever" by Joanne Shettler, and another book which I am reading right now: "Scripture Alone: The Evangelical Doctrine" by R.C. Sproul. I also like Revelation: Four Views by Steven Gregg, "Beyond the End Times: The Rest of the Greatest Story Ever Told" by John Noe, The Singer Trilogy by Calvin Miller, A History of Israel by John Bright, Biblical Hebrew by Kittel, Hoffer, and Wright.

I like one book that's called "Voices from the Silent Centuries" although Im not sure its still in print. If you can find it its excellent reading.

I agree, Joseph, the Bible does tend to have a real good message, doesn't it?

 

I really liked the Left Behind series too, although of course I wouldn't get any of my eschatological doctrine from them. They did tend to get a little long and drawn out in the end though.


OH! Then there's James Dobson's books, which again, while I don't agree with him on everything, he seems to have some very good insights.

Even better is John R. Rice's book "The Home."

Al Lacy has some very good books, both fiction and non-fiction. One especially is his book on Angels. He has written some good Christian Westerns, if anyone likes that sort of thing. Oh, and he's got some great historical fiction out there, especially during the Civil War.

 

Al Lacy wrote another book called "The Worm that Never Dies", probably not for those who aren't serious.

My hubby recommends David Limbaugh's "Persecution", on modern day persecution of Christians. Yes, this is Rush Limbaugh's brother. From many things he wrote in his book we got the impression that he could very well be a saved man. Its very good.

 

If anyone hasn't read "Foxe's Book of Martyrs" I'd recommend that as well. It has some updates in its latest printing, so try to get that one.

 

If Im in the right mood, I like Janette Oke's books

 

"Boys and Girls who Became Great Missionaries" by John Theodore Mueller

"The Golden Path to Successful Personal Soul Winning" by John R. Rice

"Night Journey from Rome" by Clark Butterfield

"Treason" by Anne Coulter.....its not a Christian book, per se, but its just good, good, if you are interested in politics, at all.

 

Oh, I can't remember the titles, but the author Lori Wicke has some very good books too.

 

"Kingdom of the Cults" is an excellent study on several different religions

There are also several good biographies on George Mueller

 

I would vote for Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis as nonfiction.

Seriously, though, I recommend How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Fee and Stuart. It's an excellent resource for hermeneutics, and it's written on a level laypersons could follow.

You are correct...that is a good book. this was a required text in my hermeneutics class way back when.

Evidence Not Seen: A Woman's Miraculous Faith in the Jungles of World War II by Darlene Deibler Rose

This is an autobiography of missionaries taken prisoner and their life and witness in the Japanese prison camps (mainly the wife; they were sent to separate camps) Phenomenal!!!

 

I'm sure I'll get criticism for this, but here goes: I recommend "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rev. Rick Warren. It's a good basic course in "Christian Living 101" for the new believer, and, to be honest, some of us who have been walking with the Lord for years could use an occaisional refresher course.

 

"Power of a Praying Wife" by I can't remember who right now.....but she wrote a couple different books along those lines. The other one is "Power of a Praying Woman."


How about "Ten Stupid Things Women Do to Mess up Their Lives." By Dr. Laura Schlessinger. Also not written by a Christian, but she still has laid out some good truths, and she has a lot of commom sense.

 

Another good one is by Dr Laura is "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands". Mrs Johnv read that, and let's just say I'm properly cared for and fed.
