What books do you consider to be indispensable for one entering the ministry? I am currently reading Spurgeon's Lectures to My Students.

Also, how should a "green" preacher occupy his time in regards to ministry? What areas should he busy himself with?

    * Liberating Ministry from the Success Syndrome by Kent & Barbara Hughes

    * Annointed Expository Preaching by Stephen and David Olford

    * The Kingdom Focused Church by Gene Mims

    * The Master Plan of Evangelism by Robert Coleman

A Preacher should focus his time in study, prayer, pastoral care/building relationships and evangelism

I recommended a book to TinyTim in his thread.

    For Pastors of Small Churches
    , by Kent Philpott

    Very good and practical book.

    Thanks for the replies, fellas.

My pastor is a good man and takes on most of the work of the church. I've been attending for a few months and would like to lighten the load. I have had several opportunities at my previous church to preach both at the church and nursing home ministry. I have also served as youth pastor. I believe God is leading me to this particular fellowship and my desire is to help the pastor with the ministry and to see other members grow in the Lord and exercise their gifts.

My pastor works full time nights and I work full time days, so it's difficult to get together for training and discipleship.

Your advice and prayers and appreciated very much.

It's great to see someone who is excited about God's working in his life, and someone who has such a servant's heart for his pastor.

God bless you, your church, and your ministry!

The Reformed Pastor by Richard Baxter

The best thing is it is free on-line:

    Link to The Reformed Pastor

The novel The Atonement Child by Francine Rivers should be required reading for every pastor so that he has at least some idea how to counsel a woman that has been raped.

The Gospel for Real Life by Jerry Bridges

I would also recommend that you get a copy of Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology.
