Recovery programs in your church

    Do you have any programs for recovery from drugs and alcohol (among other things, including grief and depression) in your church?

    Do you also serve children of those in recovery? What curriculum are you using for the children?

    We DO have recovery ministries for everyone. I don't know if there is a curriculum that they use (I can ask) but it's run by one of our pastors and his wife along with another couple - both couples were involved in drugs and drinking in their 'former' life. We also had a program for kids called Confident Kids and here's the link for that : http://www.confidentkids.com/

    The two programs didn't run at the same time, however. The recovery ministries (we have R&R for anyone in recovery and SOS for women only and now we're starting a men's only group, AND we have a support group for caregivers of the disabled) on Tuesday evening and Confident Kids ran Thursday after school.

    I have heard of the confident kids curriculum and am interested in getting it. Do you like the material??

    We've used it for a number of years and it was great - it really met a need that was there. We're now doing something different so we stopped doing the Confident Kids - we're doing KidStuf like what Andy Stanley's church in GA - it's a whole family program. We just started it last Wednesday so we don't have a full feel of how it's going but it seems to be a great program.

    I'd definately look into Confident Kids. We have a number of childrens' counseling people and they all really loved it.

    I know the KidStuf thing--It is a good thing, but it isn't necessarily geared to kids in recovery. I am looking into Confident Kids, though.

    I know - I was totally NOT thinking right last night - had too many irons in the fire. What I meant was the Sunday School program we're using is why we stopped Confident Kids! LOL! The program we're using for Sunday School is called PromiseLand and it involves small groups for the kids and we've found that it has really helped a number of the Confident Kids in the same way CC does. That said, we DO have a number of people on staff who specifically do children's counselling so if there's a greater need than what we can address in PromiseLand, we have the ability to do so.

    We've been using PromiseLand for a year now and it's been really good. The kids LOVE it, and the staff has been able to have more of an impact in the kids' lives. The only thing is that it really does take a few more workers to do it so if you're short on workers, it would be tough.

    We have Reformers Unanimous in our church, and it has a Kid's Club that runs alongside it each Friday night. The kid's stuff is specifically for the children of those in the RU program, and the program is a "kid's version" of the adult program.

    Counseling the families of substance abusers is a regular part of our counseling ministry; the program we use is Biblical discipleship.

    We usually counsel seriously-hooked longterm abusers with an eye to referring them to Teen Challenge. The only long-term substance abuse treatment that we refer to is Teen Challenge. They have an 86% success rate, five years out, and their program is 100% Bible Based. The charge is minimal, as they are a mission organization.

    Secular rehab is worthless, the biggest waste of money in the world (with success rates often in SINGLE DIGITS, and the Christian short-term programs we worked with are not much better. There have been some instances of people we ministered to, and who were not deeply into the lifestyle, were able to be treated without going away somewhere--but those cases are rare.

    Reformers has a good success rate as well. And they have a longer-term live-in facility for those who need the more indepth help.

    Im glad to see that we are having more churches get involved in trying to help people get off their addictions.

    RU is also a discipleship program, meant to help anyone have a closer walk with Christ, and of course it is completely Bible-based as well.

    at the weblink I posted they have an online store where you can buy the Home Study course, which looks like it is basically the same as we provide for the weekly program that would be set up at the church.

    But they also will send a person out to your church to present it to your church so that you can make an informed decision. OR help you start your own program if that is what you choose.

    I was the Assistant Director of RU at my last church for 3 years. If aperson is ready to get right with God, I know of no better program .

    I owe Soulman an apology.
    A few years back we had a discussion about "programs" for the addicted. I was not very gracious concerning RU. I basically said it is no different than AA and I got really nasty about it.
    Since then, I have moved back home and my church has recently (last year) begun RU on Friday nights. Funny thing. The Director ask ME to be one of his helpers in counseling these folks since I had lived the lifestyle years ago. I have now re-evaluated my previous stand and find that I was greatly in the wrong. Ru IS a good model for substance abuse recovery.

    We don't presently. I hope to start some very soon. Part of our problem has always been personnel to run these programs, but as the Lord adds people with a passion for reaching the lost and ministering to those that are hurting, we hope to add many such groups.

    After our daughter's stillbirth earlier this year, my wife has been attending Compassionate Friends, a Christian support group for parents who have lost children. She's been a few times, and I'll be going with her in the next month. She travels 1 1/2 hours to attend the group, and we feel that maybe the Lord is calling us to continue this ministry in our community.

    ALso in the works are a Cancer Recovery group and a Drug Program. They are just in the beginning stages.

    Think nothing of it. If we didn't mix it up a little bit on this board it wouldn't be fun. I am glad you have had a chance to get involved with RU.:thumbsup:
